Felix Wong Yat Wah Felix Wong's Former Idol Days

Caption: Felix Wong in "Gor Hak" 《過客》as the character Lee Tong.

Korean and Taiwanese artists are currently hot in Hong Kong. Each time artists such as Rain arrive in Hong Kong, hundreds of fans clamor to the airport wishing to get a closer look at their idol. Fans even spend large sums of money to rent vans and hail taxis to follow their idols. ranco

Looking back, there was also one artist who had legions of loyal fans, inciting such raucous behavior. Felix Wong Yat Wah became extremely popular in the 1980's after TVB aired "Gor Hak." The number of fan letters he received at the time exceeded even Liza Wang Ming Chuen and Angie Chiu Ngar Chi. Everyone who worked at TVB was aware of Felix's extreme popularity and large fan base.

Due to his tall height and handsome features, Felix was especially popular among young teenage girls. One time, when Felix was filming an outdoor scene in Wanchai and climbed into a TVB van afterwards, a group of young female fans spotted him and clamored on taxis to chase after him. Disregarding their own safety, the girls stuck their heads out of the moving taxi window and continued to scream Felix's name loudly.

Felix's popularity continued when "Soldier of Fortune" and "Legend of Condor Heroes" were broadcast. Even Carina Lau Ka Ling was a loyal Felix fan and joined TVB because she wanted to meet him in person!

Did you know what was Felix's gripe at the time? He valued his thick, luscious hair as one of his prized assets. At one point, he thought about leaving the entertainment industry due to his obsession with his hair.

When cast in TVB's Qing-era series, 《佛山贊先生》, Felix was required to shave his head bald and wear a pigtail hairpiece. Shaving his head was difficult for him and he lost sleep for 3 nights.

Veternan actor, Kwan Hoi San scolded Felix and said that as an actor, Felix can not be so frivolous. After thinking over Kwan's words, Felix decided to continue acting. His opportunities did not come easily and he should treasure them and not give up so easily.

Jayne: A nice anecdotal piece on Felix Wong's early days. He really was very handsome in his prime years! Smile

I know Felix was famous in the 80's, but didn't know he was that famous as described in the article. Shocked Very Happy

Also, I thought he made his name from "The Legend of the Condor Heroes", but people already knew him before that.

I wish TVB/Taseing will reproduce all of his 80's TV series because I did not have the chance to watch all of his TV series yet.

He looked pretty handsome back then, now when he dressed up, he still looks nice, but number one reason that I like him is his excellent performance especially in dramatic scenes.

actually, when i was growing up, i didn't care much for tony leung even though he had an outstanding performance in duke of mountain deer. i always loved felix for his great acting abilities despite his not as attractive features compared to the other 5 tigers. IMO, at that time, Michael Mui was the hottest (esp Chor Lau Heung), Tony Leung was the fun-loving one while Felix was the one who won the hearts of many. andy lau didn't have a place in my heart until he was one of the 4 heavenly kings. (i hate the tong guy, the other tiger, for wat happened with him and barbara yung!!!)

If you watched some of his earlier performances, u can see how he steals the show each time! i simply loved him! however, i don't think felix ever surpassed chow yun fat's popularity.

i believe that felix's popularity declined dramatically after reporters caught him with a prostitute in China, creating a very bad public image..with his acting skills, he probably could have been more successful today.

He also seem more traditional and conservative compared to them.

As for Tony, he's ok but a little over-rated.
