Chow Yun Fat, Louis Koo, Chilam Cheung Digging Gold Mines
The upcoming Year of the Goat will be an auspicious year for Hong Kong superstars Chow Yun Fat (周潤發), Louis Koo (古天樂), and Chilam Cheung (張智霖). Not only are the three stars expected to dominate the Hong Kong box office with their respective blockbuster films and lucrative variety program appearances in 2015.
The action flick From Vegas of Macau 2 <賭城風雲2>, the sequel to 2014’s Lunar New Year film From Vegas to Macau, will be released on Lunar New Year February 19, 2015. The sequel sees the return of Chow Yun Fat as the God of Gamblers Ken and his escapades throughout Asia. The film also features a star-studded cast, including Carina Lau (劉嘉玲), Nick Cheung (張家輝), and Shawn Yue (余文樂). Chow Yun Fat was paid $5 million USD (approximately $39 million HKD) for the film.
Louis Koo and Chilam Cheung, on the other hand, will be teaming up for Triumph in the Skies<衝上雲宵>, one of the highest-anticipated films of 2015. Triumph in the Skies also stars Francis Ng (吳鎮宇), Sammi Cheng (鄭秀文), Charmaine Sheh (佘詩曼), and Amber Kuo (郭采潔).
Louis will also be appearing in Sandra Ng’s (吳君如) comedy film 12 Golden Ducks <12金鴨>. Louis was paid 15 million RMB (approximately $18.7 million HKD) for each film. Chilam makes approximately $10 million HKD per film, and also pocketed an additional $36 million HKD to star in the Chinese variety show,There’s You On This Road <一路上有你>.
“From Vegas to Macau 2” versus “Triumph in the Skies”
Recently, teasers for From Vegas to Macau 2 and Triumph in the Skies were released, triggering a media frenzy. A short teaser for From Vegas to Macau 2 was released this week, showing explosive action scenes shot overseas and a quick snap of Chow Yun Fat kissing Carina Lau on the lips.
A teaser poster of Triumph in the Skies was also released, which was a simple poster featuring the film’s three main leads—Louis, Francis, and Chilam—walking down a runway. There is no set release date for the film yet, but it is expected to open at the same time as From Vegas to Macau 2. Industry insiders expressed their confidence in both films, and believe that they will gross over 1 billion RMB together.
Chilam Cheung to Be 2015’s Biggest Star
In addition to Triumph in the Skies, Chilam will also star in the Return of the Cuckoo <十月初五的月光> film, a movie adaptation of the TVB series of the same name. It was also revealed that Chilam has received over ten different movie scripts for next year, and is currently in the process of deciding which to film.
Chilam is also finding success in the music industry. After receiving top nominations at the Ultimate Song Chart Awards, he also won seven popularity awards at this year’s Global Chinese Music Charts. Currently in Seoul and unable to return to Hong Kong in time to accept his awards, Chilam sent messages of gratitude and expressed his excitement for winning the honors.
Currently shooting the Chinese variety series There’s You On This Road in South Korea, Chilam and wife Anita Yuen (袁詠儀) reenacted their wedding ceremony at a church. Chilam jokingly said, “If I never showered, would you still marry me?” Anita replied, “If I continue to chase Lee Min Ho, would you still mind?” The couple also dressed as beggars and begged on the streets, sharing a corncob for food.
