Finalists for Miss Hong Kong 2014 Chosen

The Miss Hong Kong 2014 semi-finals were held on August 24. Of the 16 candidates, 10 were chosen to proceed to the final round of the Miss Hong Kong Pageant, which will be held on August 31.

Sitting on an elevated stage, judge panel Charmaine Sheh (佘詩曼), Bosco Wong (黃宗澤), Li Yundi (李雲迪), Winnie Ng (伍穎梅), and Kennedy Wong (黃英豪) disqualified 6 contestants, including #2 Rosina Tang (鄧曉霖), #4 Maggie Chung (鍾美琪), #8 Jamie Lee (李汶蔚), #10 Jessica Hung (洪寧怡), #14 Fiona Fung (馮詠雩), and #16 Mandy Man (萬晴瑜). This year was Jamie Lee’s third attempt at competing for the Miss Hong Kong crown. Maggie Chung admitted that she was very upset, saying, “I was insufficient in many areas. My opponents are too strong.”

The 10 contestants that will be competing in the finals next Sunday include#1 Jan Tse (謝芷倫), #3 Linna Huynh (黃碧蓮), #5 CK Leung (梁詩其), #6 Yammi Lam (林洛鍶), #7 Katherine Ho (何艷娟), #9 Erin Wong (王卓淇), #11 Sofiee Ng (吳凱欣), #12 Janet Choi (蔡曉瑩), #13 Crystal Wong (黃燕如), and #15 Veronica Shiu (邵珮詩).

The semi-finals were hosted by Wong Cho Lam (王祖藍) and Amigo Choi (崔建邦). The celebrity voters Nat Chan (陳百祥), Carol Cheng (鄭裕玲), Kristal Tin (田蕊妮), and Kenneth Ma (馬國明) were tasked to assess the contestants’ quick-wittedness. Jan Tse, a popular favorite but a hot topic among gossip reports, expressed her confidence in the quizzes and successfully impressed the judges with her quick-thinking. She even said that she would rather compete in the Miss Hong Kong Pageant than have a boyfriend.

Linna Huynh, who is from Canada, showed off her competency in French, but her lack of fluency in Cantonese was exposed when she was told to tackle a Cantonese tongue-twister.  Nonetheless, her daring personality outshone other contestants and the judges were impressed with her courage.

Katherine Ho, who studied law, was exceptionally good at flattering the celebrity voters, and praised Carol for her lawyer portrayals in previous dramas. Sofiee Ng boldly said that she is born and bred in Hong Kong, making her the best candidate for Miss Hong Kong.

Crystal Wong, a martial artist, was asked what she would do if she comes across someone who wants to violate her. She said simply, “It’s very simple. Just kick down there.” Veronica Shiu, who studied psychology, teased Nat Chan for looking “the craziest” because of his dyed hair.

The candidates wore pink bikinis at the swimswear segment. Of the 16 women, Rosina Tang and Veronica Shiu captured the most attention with their busty figures; however, Rosina was ultimately eliminated in the sem-finals.

    1. Me too! Mostly 12#!
11# looks like Fala and Natalie love child. ahhaha!

  1. #3All the way!! She has this ancient beauty look. Cute accent! Add oil

  2. Me too vote #11 and contestant #3 once glance at her I thought it was Kate Tsui.

  3. No. 3 looks rather sweet. Name suggests Vietnamese descent? They all basically even have the same hair colour, sort of except for one who had red hair and to me not that pretty. Mostly like clones. Not one short hair. But like I said, no. 2 rather sweet. No. 11 is ok too but her chin is potentially good gossip fodder. No. 12 looks a bit like Selena. I remember there was one who spoke good cantonese and spoke rather well. Can’t remember who.

      1. Not necessarily true. I have that last name and i’m 100% Chinese. My grandparents moved from China to Vietnam for business and eventually changed their last names to fit in.

  4. 5, 7, 12, 13, 15 makes my top 5. The quality this year looks not bad

  5. Huynh, is a Chinese last name pronounce in Vietnamese. Most likely means they or their parents were from Vietnam.

    1. No,Vietnamese have that name too. That is just the Vietnamese way of spelling it. In Chinese it should be Huang/Wong. One name that suggests Chinese descendent is Cheung/Zhang which in Vietnamese is Truong.

    2. People with last name Huynh, doesn’t mean they or parents were from Vietnam.

Back in the old days when you moved to a different country, they automatically translate your last name to their language but they would always do it to make it sounds similiar to your orginal name. Vong/Huynh are the same as huang/Wong. My dad’s brother moved to vietnam to take over family business. They translated my uncle last name from Wong to Huynh.

The only exception is Lam – Vietnamese regonized that last name so was not required to change it. Europe was the same too bad in the days.

  6. My three picks are still in the running! #3, 12, 15! Hey, they might even finish in that order.

  7. Based on their individual photos, #11 and #12 looks so much alike except 11 have longer facial features. #3 and #13 are my favourites!

  8. #3 and #5 are the prettiest to me, from the pictures above.

  9. based on their performance during the semi-finals, I have to root for #6, #9, and #11. I have a feeling #11 will win MHK.

  10. when a pure Vietnamese person’s last name is Huynh, most likely their descent is Chinese. #3, her last name is Huynh, I can say 100% her family were came from Vietnam, but doesn’t mean they have Vietnamese descent, just like lots of Chinese people live in Malaysia and somewhere else….

      1. oops wrong post!

But getting to your comment, people with that last name doesn’t mean they are vietnamese. Back in the old days when you moved/immigrant to a different country, they would take your last name and convert to their language. This is the same with European.

My dad’s last name is Wong and his brother got Huynh because his brother moved to Vietnam to take over family business so they translated his last name although he was born in HK. The only acception last name is “Lam” because vietnamese people recognized that word, in another word is that “Lam” is in their language/dictionary.

  11. I love #3! She was so cute in her interview! She is my top pick! Go Linna!!!

    1. I beg to differ. I thought she embarrassed herself during the interview; it was painful to watch…

  12. From these photos I think #7 and #9 are the prettiest but in other photos, #3 is really pretty.

  13. Wow… can’t believe a lot of you guys said # 3 is pretty. Don’t see the beauty in her. She Kinda Ugly To Be honest…..

  14. Support #3 all the way!! I think she would be a great addition to tvb family, she is so cute and friendly

    1. If number 3 wants to film series for TVB, she needs to improve her Cantonese first cuz it’s pretty chappy and needs to learn how to act too.

      1. May as well not vote/put anyone not fluent in Chinese in top 3 if you can’t stand actresses with language barrier issues.

      2. Reply to MW: this is after all a Miss Hong Kong pageant so a person must able to speak the native language well in order to be understood and to connect with the locals, right? With her fluency in Cantonese at the moment, what makes you think judges will pick her to be in the top three. At the end of the day, she’s going to represent Hong Kong.

      3. Even if I don’t point #3 language problem now, netziens going to complain about her crappy Cantonese when she becomes a tvb actress. That’s something I can guarantee dyou.

      4. I don’t understand why #3 can’t speak Cantonese fluently if her parents supposed to be from Hong Kong? Heck, I’m not from Hong Kong yet I can Cantonese better than her.

      5. In case of comprehension issues, my statement was a general one and does not refer to anyone in particular. 🙂

      6. Don’t believe you a for second. If it’s a general statement, why was your comment under mine? Obviously you have something against against my comment.

  15. For those who supports #3; what the heck do you see in her?

  16. What the requirement to join miss hong kong? Can an non asian/chinese descendent join it tooo?

    1. In order to compete in Miss Hong Kong, you have to a legal Hong Kong I’D or birth certificate.

    2. >Can an non asian/chinese descendent join it tooo?

I really hope not. Strictly MHO.

  17. I watched the semi final. #7, 9 and 11 had the best performance. I predict #9 will be 2nd or 3rd, #11 will most likely win. #9 photo is not very pretty but she was pretty in the live show. #3’s Chinese is horrible but if she gets placed it’s probably because of her cute/bubbly personality. #12 is popular choice too but her performance is just okay, if she wins it’s probably mostly for her looks, #15 also has bubbly personality, might have some chance too.

  18. After seeing them at interview in today VIP…
I will vote a big no for all of them.

Don,t judge me, it s my choice… You guy can love them…

    1. lol. ur name is hilarious. i find her voice very annoying when she talks…

    2. say hi to miss hong kong 2014 – no. 15 miss veronica shiu!

      1. Ya ya ya, I think they were rigged. Someone else should have won. No 15 is ugly.

  19. I think #1 is actually pretty and she kinda reminds me of the 80’s and 90’s beauty. All the others are cute but not very stand out, just very typical faces of girls nowadays. Most of them almost look the same too. I don’t know if it’s because if the hair and make up or what not.
