Lawrence Ng’s Complicated Love Life
Lawrence Ng (吳啟華) is best known for his role as Dr. Paul Ching from the popular franchise, Healing Hands <妙手仁心>. His popularity was at the highest peak during the late 1990s to early 2000s when he was with TVB. During that time, he filmed numerous big productions and was paired with many female artists. Just like in the series, The Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre <倚天屠龍記>, Lawrence’s love life was complexly entwined with many women.
Stardom
Lawrence graduated from the 12th TVB acting class back in 1983 and started out in the industry by taking on small mediocre roles. In the earlier stages of his career, he played a number of antagonistic roles in TVB. Afterwards, he became known for his participation in the erotic film, Sex and Zen <玉蒲團之偷情寶鑒>. It was not until he was cast in the first installment of Healing Hands as Dr. Paul Ching, did he rise to true stardom. The professional and well manner Paul was well received by the general public and became the changing point in Lawrence’s career – earning him the name, “housewife killer”.
Fell In Love Ten Times
Despite being unable to wipe away the image from his erotic movie, Sex and Zen, Lawrence successfully met his first wife in Thailand. It was love at first sight, and the pair got married only after a short period of time. Allegedly, Lawrence’s Thai girlfriend suffered from major weight loss because he fell in love with another woman. Not wanting to see her health deteriorate, he married the Thai woman on a whim. To this day, Lawrence admits that the marriage was one of his biggest mistakes.
Marriage failure aside, Lawrence was nicknamed a playboy because he fell in love with every female co-star he worked with. Lawrence also failed to breakup with his girlfriends at the time before starting a new relationship. This behavior was demonstrated in his infamous high profile relationship with TVB actress Iva Law (羅泳嫻). They pair met on the set of Fate Twisters <黑夜彩虹> in 2002. After a period of working together, Lawrence began pursuing Iva who was 15 years his junior. Lawrence’s feelings for Iva quickly diminished after a year but he was unable to break it off due to his wavering personality.
While in the relationship, Lawrence was linked with a prostitute and the gossip destroyed the image he spent years building up. After many years, Iva was able to let go of the past and said, “I was so upset to see my relationship with Lawrence on the cover of magazines back then. I thought it was ironic when I received praises for an undercover role as a prostitute in Master of Play <心戰>. But this is all in the past; we’re more mature now. I’ll still send my blessings!”
Over the years, Lawrence has openly stated that he has fallen in love ten times, both with non-celebrities and celebrities. He revealed that he once had feelings for Ada Choi (蔡少芬) when they worked together in Healing Hands.
Remorseful About Past Relationships
Now that he is married and has a daughter, Lawrence openly shares that he does feel regretful and apologetic for his poorly handled relationships. “I haven’t spoken to Iva in a long time, but I know she’s married now. In reality, I’ve wronged her the most in the past.” However, Lawrence also defends the girl he briefly liked when he was still dating Iva. He clarified that the girl was actually a DJ and not a prostitute.
After many failed relationship, Lawrence finally tied the knot in 2004 with mainland actress, Shi Yang Zi (石洋子). The duo met on the set of Shanghai Legend <上海灘之俠醫傳奇>, and once again, Lawrence slowly fell for his female co-star. Against the odds, he dated Shi Yang Zi for three years before getting married. Now with a daughter, it was said that Lawrence even quit smoking and drinking. It has been three decades since Lawrence first set foot into the entertainment industry, and while he has suffered from many ups and downs in past relationships, he confessed that the experience enabled him learn from his mistakes and helped him become he person he is today.

I support you Lawrence hope to see the new coming TVB series soon. Every one make mistakes but not everyone can admit their wrongdoings and start a new page. Bravo everyone deserve a new beginning. May god bless you and your family 🙂
He is god brother of Bosco, ray and ron.hiiiihhiiii
”Law ren ci is a grand actor, mainstream and pro on(?).”Miss no take Lawrence deserve better.
thanks for being so honest and admitting the mistakes. It takes the right person to settle down and to change the bad habits.
Lawrence is the best after many years.
you must be kidding. i tried watch healing hands and found that laul ching and lawrence are not as good as what people always say and is wooden! healing hands also very boring and draggy! would pick on call 36 over the healing hands trilogy any day!
Seems like eventually his wife managed to tame him!! Remember him well watching with my family when I was younger!!! and he is a favourite in my family then. Hope to see him more now in TVB series
he was a great actor
“Lawrence graduated from the 12th TVB acting class back in 1983 and started out in the industry by taking on small mediocre roles.”
He was the main actor in tvb’s the possessed with sheren tang and in book and sword with kitty lai.
supporting role for book and sword with kitty lai.
He was in many series back then. He played the bad king Yang Guang in the Grand Canal which I think was one of his most notable roles. I actually liked him in The Legend of the Book and Sword. His character was really sweet and selfless. He was the main villain in the Other Side of the Horizon with Andy and Angie as well.
I thought he was great as Yang Guang really was perfect for the young villain role opposite Tony Leung Chui Wai.
Admire him for being able to admit his wrongdoings in the past. This shows that he is honest not only to himself, but also to the public. Bravo!
I like how Lawrence is so honest about his past mistakes. I remember he played a lot of villain roles, but I started to like him in Files of Justice V and of course, Healing Hands. Him and Ada are still one of my favorite pairings, too bad things just didn’t work out between them in real life.
Lawrence is older so hopefully he is wiser and more mature to understand and improve his shortcomings, then rectify and sustain through hard work so that he becomes more stable. Of course, there are men that will never learn or admit to their mistakes and flounder in life.
I don’t watch TVB but could they possibly make a series like this? It’s insanely entertaining and hilariously stupid – hookers and weight loss and Thais – it’s all whirling around in my mind’s eye!
awesome, just awesome
I always thought he was a scum bag but that’s my opinion.
Geez, how many TVB actors were former cat 3 actors…(I don’t want to know) >.<
What’s wrong with being a former cat 3 actor? They just wanted to make ends meet – even Jackie Chan acted in a cat 3 movie before. It’s not like they’re doing anything to harm you, and if you don’t like it, simply don’t watch.
that seem to show that lawrence don’t have much talent as real actor in the first place. never found him a good actor. his role paul ching was boringly acted!
@sel_fi_wu – That’s just your opinion. A bunch of actors and actresses starred in cat 3 movies in the 90’s. Anthony Wong and Shu Qi both starred in cat 3 movies before, but they are both recognized as talented actors. I thought Lawrence did a great job in Healing Hands. His character IS supposed to be sort of boring – someone who’s a perfectionist and only thinks about his work, and that was what caused his divorce with his ex-wife. It’s not until his close brush with illness and knowing Jackie more that he began to change. As much as I loved On Call and Ma Ming and Tavia, I would Healing Hands over On Call anyday. You’ll probably disagree, so again, it’s a matter of opinion. *shrug*
I’m down to call Healing Hands I my favorite over On Call.
What’s wrong with being a former cat 3 actor? I suppose nothing if that’s your sort of thing. If I’m not mistaken, cat 3 movies are basically soft porn.
I’m just a bit surprised that these actors had to take these extremes (though I personally think it’s a bigger plunge for a female actress to be in a cat 3 as opposed to a male due to the nudity and so forth).
You don’t see alot of big hollywood actors being in cat 3 movies. I mean sex tapes are a different thing all together but I’m talking about making ends meet.
On another note, this is again my opinion. I find him to be very stiff.
Even Do Do Cheng acted in Cat 3 movie before
People need to make a living and besides Cat 3 in Hong Kong covers pretty wide range especially back in the 90’s. It is basically the equivalent of USA rating of R – covering nudity, language, and violence – it is not necessarily soft porn.
meh, not a fan of his and never have been.
surprised to hear iva is married though. good for her. although she doesn’t have the looks of a tvb fadan, she is still very pretty. she should have stayed a model or tried dabbling in film. what a waste of her good looks in tvb.
Agree, she is actually pretty good looking and always just cameo kind of roles… what a waste in TVB and not only her many many artists are wasting time and effort in TVB unless you have connections i guess.
same here! paul ching is horribly overrated! he was so boring and lawrence acting is wooden at best!
also sucks that tvb uses on call 2 to bring lawrence back into limelight and sacrificing kenneth’s screentime in the process! lawrence role isn’t needed in on call2 don’t get why tvb doing this to kenneth and the other original casts
U jealous Lawrence steal time off Kenneth. U make Kenneth fans sound dumb.
and how old were you back then?
You can support Kenneth but that does not mean that you can put Lawrence down. No on is perfect and I feel it is really noble of Lawrence to be able to admit fault and change for the better. Many people are not able to do so. You swear that Kenneth is perfect in every way.
HeTieShou: “noble” is the word I would use on Lawrence’s much belated confession of infidelity. lol!
Dang! I meant to say “noble” is NOT the word I would use on Lawrence’s belated confession of cheating.
Ok, I guess noble is not the right word to use. However, I still give Lawrence credit for admitting fault regardless of how long it has been and that he has changed into a better person. What is the point of dwelling on the bad and unhappy past? The past is the past and as long as he has changed for the better, I feel that is much more important rather than keep on condemning him about what he did in the past. The past cannot be changed, but we can do something about the present and the future.
lawrence also sounds like a douchebag man here!
I do not know how any of the two comments above you translate over to whatever you just typed out.
I always like Iva. She’s pretty and got that sexy looking appearance….. I think she’s better looking that few leading actress at tvb.
HE GOT A BIG HEART! he should be a heart doc instead of a brain doc hahaha!
Or rather, he’s got a FLOWER Heart… (get it, haha?)
too bad it’s not a plastic flower heart…(get it, haha?) lol..
Ada Choi was smart not to fall for Lawrence Ng. He sounds so flaky about love. Pity his past girlfriends.
In my family, Lawrence Ng and his brother were never big stars. We remember them more as villains and supporting actors from their unflattering perverted and evil roles in the 80s TVB drama. So it’s quite a change to suddenly see him acting as the ‘goody two shoes’ doctor Paul Ching in Healing Hands. He was well cast for that role, I must admit. The boring, straight-laced, unspontaneous doctor suited Lawrence Ng to a T.
Haha! I remembered him in all the villain roles too! I remember all of a sudden he TVB started letting him play the good guys roles…it was weird. My room-mate at the time hated watching 倚天屠龍記 because of that! She’s like what the heck! He’s a villain! 😛
I find Lawrence much more memorable as a villain – I still picture him as prince/king in Grand Canal better than as the doctor in Healing Hands. He has one of the best evil “sneers” in the business when he wrinkles his nose.
