Kate Tsui Will Focus Career in Mainland China

Former TVB actress Kate Tsui (徐子珊), who left TVB in 2015, signed with Wong Cho-lam’s (王祖藍) new studio last year. Although the 37-year-old has been busy with event appearances in Hong Kong, she shared that she will soon move her focus to Mainland China, where she has been offered jobs to appear on reality TV and dramas.

“At the moment my focus is the mainland market,” said Kate, while at a charity event a few days ago. “I’ll also be maintaining my jewelry business at the same time.”

At the mention that Bobby Au-yeung (歐陽震華) fainted from hyperthermia while shooting the new TVB drama My Ages Apart <跨時代>, Kate said, “It is hard work. I’ve never went through that before, but I’ve had experienced filming a period drama under 36 C (96.8 F) weather. I do think it’s more tiring for men because they often have to wear thicker outfits, including the facial hair. Thankfully he’s okay. I hope Bobby will find more time to rest and drink more water.”

On the other hand Alex Fong (方力申), who brought his parents to the charity event, shared that he won’t be able to celebrity Mother’s Day with his family due to work. He plans on celebrating it a few days ahead of time.

As for starting his own family, he said, “I’ll leave that to fate, because you need to find the right person. Although she may be right for me, I may not be right for her. Getting married is not the hard part—it’s maintaining the family. I’ve had friends who went through failed marriages, and I need to tread more carefully.”

  1. Wow! It has been almost two years and WCL still hasn’t come through with any appropriate job offers for her.other than these promotional gigs.

    Time for a new agent?

    1. @aiya
it depends on how much she wanted to work. she runs jewlry business, maybe she wanted to focus on that more? but if her interest was really on her entertainment career, yea, it’s pitiful that all she could get were these promotional gags.

      1. @m0m0 Well, at least according to this article, she obviously does want to remain in entertainment.

    2. @aiya though in wong cho lam’s defense, supposedly kate turned down multiple job offers to go on a year long vacation (think she only makes promo appearances to replenish funds). but i’m sure even a ribbon cutting would pay her more than anything tvb’s ever done in the past

      1. @rucofan1100 Well, if Kate had turned down all job offers for the past two years, then WCL should have dropped her because she is not making him any money by turning down everything that he had to work hard to to secure.

What she is doing now is nothing more than what “fake models” would do…

      2. @aiya WCL biz is still new. Doubt he’s in position to be overly picky on who he signs or strict on contract terms. She needs him and he needs her. So he might be “open one eye and close the other” (if she has indeed in turning stuff down, which I doubt.) I lean toward you in term that WCL is probably struggling to find her opportunity; again, his company is still young and can’t really flex any “friendship” cards (he hasn’t build the stack, ha.) For her, she’s in no position to drop off the contract and move to another agency. She doesn’t have the star powet atm. She hasn’t breakthrough in any medium, any market or any niche. She’s in a limbo. Best of luck to her in mainland.

      3. @jjwong I tend to agree with the piece about WCL struggling to find Kate opportunities, since she truly isn’t that marketable. I don’t think it’s really an issue with his company not being effective, as it’s obvious that he has connections in the Mainland and so he would have an easier time getting his artists gigs up there if needed. And no question that WCL has connections in HK, not just at TVB and HKAPA (which he is a graduate of) but also in the movie industry. I remember him saying in an interview recently that one challenge he’s been working on is not being able to dedicate as much time to each artist as he would like due to his own busy schedule. Of course, some of the artists he signed don’t really need his constant involvement, since they are able to get plenty of opportunities on their own (for example – Sheren Tang and Power Chan, both of whom are signed to his company and have their own network of connections to fall back on), but others who neither have the talent nor the name recognition might struggle a bit. I honestly don’t really see Kate succeeding in Mainland but who knows – maybe one day she will prove all of us wrong….

  2. Didn’t Bobby faint once before while filming a drama? He needs better care.

    1. @jjwong Actually, Bobby needs to stop filming for TVB, lol. Twice already he gets taken to the hospital while filming for them (though the other time it technically was at a personal event and not physically filming but still…it was during his time working for TVB so maybe it’s bad luck, lol). Filming for TVB is rough – the grueling hours, lack of sleep, sometimes waste time standing around waiting for their scenes, still having to film during horrible HK weather, etc. Bobby is too nice to TVB…he should make more demands of them like the other veteran artists who are invited to return do – it should be on his terms, not TVB’s…

      1. @llwy12 What would Bobby do if not filming for TVB though? He’s not exactly a wanted man nor does he have side businesses; not that I can remember anyways. He’s probably not hurting for money but at least he can treat it as a hobby. He (and everyone involves with TVB) does need much better work condition though.

      2. @jjwong Bobby has connections in Mainland – after he left TVB, he filmed in Mainland for a few years and was able to establish a pretty good name there. Also, don’t forget that he does have some name recognition on the international circuit with his nomination in the International Emmy Awards (even though he didn’t win, being the only HK actor to ever be nominated counts for something). He also DOES have businesses on the side….he invested in one of his friend’s restaurants back in 2000 and was able to turn over a profit in a matter of months. Throughout the past 17 years, he has opened up 2 more branches of the same restaurant himself and business has continued to thrive (I heard the place is constantly packed with lines often out the door), so he obviously is pretty busy outside of filming. Besides, he only has a per series contract with TVB and already said that he films 1 series a year for them out of loyalty as well as wanting to help them develop newer artists (he’s one of the few veterans who outright said he has no problems “babysitting” newbies, lol)…basically, TVB needs him more than he needs them, so he can definitely establish his own terms, it’s just that he’s too nice and too loyal to hold TVB to the fire, which was obvious when he had that contract dispute with them 2 years ago – the way he was treated, he should’ve told TVB to take a hike (other artists have done so for less infraction), but instead he chose to “forgive and forget” and re-sign with TVB without any particular special requests.

      3. @llwy12 I obviously don’t follow Bobby. Glad to hear he’s doing well outside of TVB. He seems like a fun, easy going teddy bear. He acts for enjoyment rather than financial support. Though I like his acting, he needs to take better care of himself. Better yet, he needs to demand/shape TVB for the better. With his mindset though, he probably doesn’t think anything wrong with TVB and sees them (and probably the rest of the world) in a better light xD
