Yang Yang’s “Once Upon a Time” Critically Panned
Once Upon a Time <三生三世十里桃花>, film adaptation of the xianxia novel Three Lives Three Worlds: Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms, is not meeting the hype.
The film starring the popular Crystal Liu Yifei (刘亦菲) and Yang Yang (杨洋) opened in China nationwide on August 3, 2017. The film depicts the tragic love story between Bai Qian and Ye Hua, two gods tested by the cruel game of fate. The novel was previously adapted into a television drama starring Yang Mi (杨幂) and Mark Chao (趙又廷), which went on to become the most-watched television drama online.
Though the original source material and its television counterpart had solid critical ratings, Once Upon a Time was critically panned, and was unable to live up the hype that the television drama had established.
Critics and fans criticized the film for having a broken script, poor acting, and the lack of chemistry between Crystal and Yang Yang. Many fans found the love story too long-winded.
Many fans found Yang Yang’s performance disappointing, although Yang Yang’s previous performances in the films The Left Ear <左耳> and I Belonged to You <从你的全世界路过> were rated favorably. Both films were also box office successes, growing 485 million RMB and 814 million RMB respectively.
Yang Yang and Dilraba to Star in “The King’s Avatar”
Once Upon a Time may have disrupted Yang Yang’s solid filmography, but the actor will most likely another hit in his hands once he gets started on The King’s Avatar <全职高手>, live-action adaptation of the book of the same name.
The King’s Avatar, which has also been adapted into an anime, tells the story of Ye Xiu, a top-tier player from the online multiplayer game Glory. Dilireba (迪丽热巴) plays his confidant and love interest, Su Mucheng. The King’s Avatar, written by Butterfly Blue, is popular amongst the online gaming community.
20-year-old Neo Hou (侯明昊) is rumored to be playing Ye Xiu’s rival Huang Shaotian. XNINE member Xiao Zhan (肖戰) is rumored to be playing Zhou Zekai.

He should branch out from idol dramas.
Also, 3l3w is not the most watched TV drama online.
He wasn’t the main lead in either The Left Ear or I Belonged To You. That worked in his favor. Now being the main lead in a movie exposed his weaknesses.
The King’s Avatar is unlikely to help him since it’s not a movie and it sounds like another idol role.
I really wanna see the movie just to see how bad it is. Do you guys know where to stream it online?
I really want to see if the review is right. Hope there will be on youtube.
Watch this movie in the cinema yesterday. My first thought was CGI looks kinda fake. But then, the more I watch, the more beautiful the scenes get and less fake too. By the end, I love the graphic of the movie.
Same feeling with the acting. Initially, both actors seem awkward in the beginning, but have more and more chemistry as the movie went and by the end they were able to touch my heart. I think Yang Yang was well casted for the role.
The story, I agree is disjointed. I have to google for extra info of the story to get a full understanding of the plot and relationship of the characters.
Overall, I’ll give this movie 7/10.
I agree with the review; the movie was terrible. Yang Yang is a complete mismatch in playing Mark Zhao’s role and watching him on the screen irritated me. It looked like he was smug 80% of the time instead of brooding and depressed. He also looks like a kid in comparison to Liu Yifei. Though I don’t consider LYF a heavyweight as an actress, you can tell that 1) she’s more mature + older than him and 2) she’s a better actress in the film. Technically both their roles suck because I can hardly feel the chemistry between them and independent of each other, their characters were very meh. LYF didn’t even have a proper anger scene for godsakes when she wanted her eyes back. Her cry scenes were magnificent though. Still, a good crier does not make a good actress.
Overall, movie is entirely forgettable and a waste of money for a movie tkt if you actually watch it in a theatre. Not worth the hype
