Rising Star Roxanne Tong is No Longer Known as the Niece
Since her audition into 2012’s Miss Hong Kong Pageant to becoming a TVB actress, 30-year-old Roxanne Tong (湯洛雯) has always been known as the niece of Kent Tong (湯鎮業). But with the release of her latest drama The Tofu War <燦爛的外母>, let’s hope that name can finally be put to rest.
“Everyone has their own speed,” said Roxanne. “I can’t say I’m jealous of any particular one. As for now… touchwood. I think my career’s been developing well so far! It’s okay if I don’t get to play the female lead. I have to do well myself first.”
Roxanne’s debut role was a supporting character in the popular sitcom Come Home Love <愛·回家> in 2012. After playing “Sisi” for two years, Roxanne was given a shot at playing a new supporting role for 2015’s The Executioner <刀下留人>. This year, Roxanne landed her first lead role in The Tofu War, starring opposite Nancy Sit (薛家燕) and Lai Lok-yi (黎諾懿).
It’s been a long time coming, and with Roxanne’s rise in popularity, a promotion into TVB’s fadan line up doesn’t seem too far away.
It wasn’t an easy rise for Roxanne, who for years lived under her uncle Kent Tong’s shadow. It was even once speculated that Roxanne could get an easy pass at TVB because of her family background, but years of playing supporting at TVB has proven that Roxanne didn’t get any help at all.
“Honestly, I wasn’t very happy with it at first,” said Roxanne. “Whenever I leave the house, I would hear people saying that I am so and so’s niece, and I didn’t want to be just known as that. But that has changed now. More people are calling me by my name. I am no longer known as just The Niece. I actually don’t really care what people call me anymore—what I want the most is for people to remember me.”
The Tofu War premiered on August 28, 2017. It will air for a total of 20 episodes.

I like Roxanne. Acting seems to come naturally to her and she has the face that is suited for both good and bad characters. She hasn’t had any breakthrough role yet so I can’t say for sure if she’s a good actress but she’s definitely very enjoyable to watch. I thought Tofu War would be pretty lame but it’s quite enjoyable as a simple comedy.
Whatttt? She’s thirty???
Have been noticing her in Sidewalk Scientist and she was great in that drama with Moses and Maggie.
About time tvb got new fadans.
Elaine Yiu is getting old.
@bubbles23 Lol that fact that she’s 30 already was really a surprise. I been a fan of her Come home love 1 and i was impressed with her performance there.
I don’t think Elaine is getting old though as her performance in Unholy alliance proves that she is pretty versatile and can probably still pull off many more performances that the audience loves. But in between TVB’s internal politics i don’t think we’ll see many new actors/actresses any time soon though.
Roxanne is indeed a pleasure to watch and I hope she will be given more important roles to prove if she could be in the lineup of TVB new fadans.
Her role in The Unholy Alliance is kinda waste of her talent and I would rather she takes up significant supporting roles or leading role in simple family drama as in The Tofu War, which could give her more screen times and room for further development.
Surprisingly I enjoyed this series. I don’t even mind the whole amnesia. The ending is fitting! I have a whole perspective for Nancy Kit. She IS good. Though her char is suppose to be annoying, I feel her and see the related aspects for that generation.
Roxanne is definitely be watch out. She seems natural and has potentially. Chris Lai, on the other hand, missed the mark for me. His drama, hurtful, feel scenes fell short.
This series is simple but heartfell and relatable. I root for Nancy as BSA. Roxanne as new comer though TVB has no such award lol. She’s still too new and raw foe MI.
