The Three Tigers Have No Scenes Together in “Chasing the Dragon”
Donnie Yen (甄子丹), Andy Lau (劉德華), Felix Wong (黃日華), Kent Tong (湯鎮業), Niki Chow (周麗淇) and the cast of film Chasing the Dragon <追龍> attended the film’s red carpet premiere in Kowloon Tong last week. The crime film, directed by Jason Kwan (關智耀) and Wong Jing (王晶), stars Donnie Yen as the renowned criminal “Crippled Ho” Ng Shek-ho and Andy Lau as the corrupted police official Lee Rock. Ray Lui (呂良偉), who portrayed Crippled Ho in the 1991 film To Be Number One <跛豪> was at the premiere to support the film.
September 27 was Andy’s 56th birthday; the cast and organizers presented Andy with a large birthday cake, coupled with flowers and birthday buns gifted by his fans. After singing Happy Birthday, Andy’s fellow tigers Felix Wong and Kent Tong gave him an embrace. Andy said his birthday wish was for Chasing the Dragon to make it big in the box office.
“Chasing the Dragon” Deleted One Hour of Material
Andy shared that over one hour of the film was cut due to its long length. Every actor in the film had at least 20 percent of their original screen time cut out. Donnie said, “It’s really a shame. We all worked hard for each and every scene.” Andy said with a laugh, “If we get good reviews, I’ll convince Wong Jing to release an extended version, but I don’t think it’ll be able to be released in two parts. We’re only getting paid for one film.” Donnie quickly responded, “We’ll get bonuses if the film gets good results!”
Donnie invited good friend and “Crippled Ho” veteran Ray Lui to watch the film with him. Donnie admitted that he used Ray’s original 1991 film as a reference for his performance. “Ray didn’t give me any pressure about it. He believed that I could find my own take on the role. We all have our own ways to act.”
Video of Andy’s Daughter Leaked, Donnie Yen Hopes the Best for Wu Jing
At an earlier fan meeting, Andy shared with fans a cute video of his 5-year-old daughter Hanna Lau (劉向蕙) wiping his feet. The video was filmed soon after Andy recovered from his accident earlier this year.
Although the video was not meant to be viewed outside of the fanmeet, the video still leaked on the internet. Andy said, “There’s always going to be some undercovers. But it was a happy, and now that everyone’s seen it, I don’t need to talk about it! Let’s talk about the movie.”
Reporters then asked Donnie if he has the confidence to take down China’s biggest movie Wolf Warriors 2 <戰狼2>, which stars Wu Jing (吳京). Rumors say that Donnie and Wu Jing, who was his costar in 2005’s SPL <殺破狼>, do not get along. Donnie said, “We don’t need to win anybody. They’re both Chinese-language films. I hope we all do well. The audiences have another film to consider watching. Besides, it’ll be too boring to watch only one film during the holidays!”
“Three Tigers” Reunion
Chasing the Dragon is the first film since 2007’s Brothers <兄弟> where Andy reunited with his fellow Five Tigers members Felix and Kent. Brothers also starred “Big Tiger” Michael Miu (苗僑偉), who was unable to partake in Chasing the Dragon. The last time “Small Tiger” Tony Leung (梁朝偉) shared a film with his fellow tigers was
Unfortunately, the “Three Tigers” did not have a scene together in the film. Felix did do a scene with Andy, but that was deleted from the final cut. Kent said, “It wasn’t until we did post-production recording when I realized that a good third of my scenes were cut in the film. I also had a scene with Andy, but that had to be deleted.”
Asking Felix and Kent if they would like to request to do another film together, Felix said, “I hope so.” (Do the five of you occasionally meet up?) “Very rarely. Definitely not all five of us.” Kent added, “I’m usually not in Hong Kong.”
The conversation then fell on Kent’s twin boys, both who have attended the red carpet premiere. Felix said, “They’re both very tall and very handsome. Much better-looking than you back then.” Kent said, “You’re not wrong!” Kent added that he has met Felix’s own daughter Adrian Wong (黃芷晴), who he described as “cool like her mother.”
Asking if they have seen Andy’s daughter, Kent said, “No. He’s very private and protective. Also, our children have grown. His daughter is still very young.”
When it comes to questions about his niece Roxanne Tong (湯洛雯), who is rumored to be living in with boyfriend Joey Law (羅天宇), Kent said, “It’s not in my place to care about this. They’re all adults and they have their own world. I don’t even see my own sons that often anymore.”
Chasing the Dragon opened in Hong Kong cinemas on September 28, 2017.
