Zanilia Zhao, Loura Lou Courted to Star in “Wrong Carriage, Right Groom” Remake

The popular 2001 Chinese period comedy Wrong Carriage, Right Groom <上错花轿嫁对郎> will be getting a brand new remake, and producers are actively courting Zanilia Zhao Liying (赵丽颖) and Loura Lou Yixiao (娄艺潇) to star in the ancient comedy.

The hit television series which starred Nie Yuan (聂远), Crystal Huang Yi (黄奕), Shi Xiaohong (师小红) and Li Lin (李琳) tells the story of two Yangzhou women who each went on the wrong wedding carriage when the bride-to-bes stopped by the same small village town to avoid the downpour of rain. The girls ended up marrying into the wrong families. The period comedy is regarded as a classic in the Chinese TV industry.

According to various reports, Zanilia Zhao and Loura Lou are being courted to play the two female leads in the remake. Han Dong (韩栋) and Yuan Hong (袁弘) are rumored to be playing the two male leads.

Zanilia is one of China’s highest-paid actresses—many of her starring dramas have become ratings hits in the mainland, with the smash hit Princess Agents <楚乔传> being her latest success. Loura Lou, on the other hand, came to prominence after starring in the hit television series iPartment <爱情公寓>.

Should this casting come true, the Wrong Carriage remake may end up being the main act to push Han Dong, who despite having had a prolific acting career, failed to find a hit under his hands.

What do you guys think of this casting?

  1. Does anyone know if princess agents is worth watching? I bought into the journey of flower hype and was sorely disappointed. I have quite a backlog of downloaded shows to go through, just hoping for a Chinese show that’s as satisfying as nirvana on fire

    1. @rucofan1100

I would recommend watching some Youtube reviews on that drama if you are fine with spoilers.

To me, Princess Agents was a terrible joke like Journey of Flower, they were rated so high but just about equally as boring and pointless. But it doesn’t hurt to skim through because it is very skim-able, it’s not one of those shows where you can sit and watch without skipping everything.

    2. @rucofan1100
Yes. It’s worthing watching. I won’t give it a 10, but I would give an 8. It’s one of the better dramas of 2017. I like all three main leads in this drama. Enjoy!

      1. @rucofan1100
You are welcome. You should watch a couple episodes of the drama and decide it for yourself. What do you get to lose? It doesn’t get popular and high rating for no reason. Of course there are flaws in this drama.

      2. @dramas4me smh I’ve tried the watching few episodes part, assumed most of these shows were just slow starters, decided to power through, and by the end of it “why did I stick with this?” But most def gonna give it a shot

      3. @rucofan1100
You should watch “Disguiser”. Normally I don’t like that type of drama, but I really like this one. It starred by Hu Ge, Jin Dong & Wang Kai. It’s very intense. You should also watch “Eternal Love” starred by two very young actors, Xing Zhao Lin & Liang Jie. This drama has 24 episodes & only about 35 minutes long episodes. The chemistry between the lead is incredible. You go through it so quickly because it’s so fun to watch it. Some parts are very funny.

      4. @dramas4me thanks eternal love sounds nice, for a while I was under the impression all Chinese dramas were at least 50 episodes. Sorry but ww2 dramas are quite a downer, I know I know it’s hu ge, but alas…

    3. @rucofan1100 no, it’s a terrible drama. poorly scripted, poorly directed, voice dubbing disaster. it’s boring & way too much political background noise that doesn’t make sense either. i would skip it if i were you. save yourself some time to watch better productions. plus, there were a ton of loose ends that weren’t even answered by the time the drama ended. i’m actually pretty disappointed in Zanilia Zhao for choosing this project + Journey of Flower (but at least JOF was at least partially interesting.)

      1. @coralie jof was better than this? I was hoping it was gonna be the opposite. Guess I’ll just skip to otcb then. Btw any recommendations on better productions? Specifically mainland Chinese ones?

      2. @rucofan1100 are you looking for ancient or modern Chinese productions? how updated are you with Chinese dramas in general? don’t wanna rec stuff you’ve seen already.

right now, I’m watching “nothing gold can stay.” fantastic show and the latest to come out of China. but the plot is somewhat tortuous for the female lead. nevertheless, great character development and wonderful cast chemistry.

      3. @coralie well primarily im looking to move away from tvb shows. I remember watching nirvana on fire and was just blown away by the production values and story. Figured top drawing jof would be equally good, but man that show did not need to be that long. Also three blossoms was just a chore. Preferably anything as good as nirvana, with less focus on won’t they will they romances that get dragged on forever. Also preferably something dubbed in canto (heard that anti corruption show was good)

      4. @rucofan1100 so you don’t have a preference for modern/ancient?

if looking for serious productions, “nothing can gold can stay” is one of the better ones to come out from china this year. “empresses in the palace” is also very good, same lead actress, but an older production. “scarlet heart” (Chinese ancient version) is also somber, but realistic-ish.

if looking for light-hearted, fun productions, “princess go go” is a short, web-drama that has bushels of comedy. beware: the ending sucks, but if you forgo the last 20 minutes of the finale, you’re fine. “wuxin” season 1 is cute (hawt lead) and great chemistry between cast. “let’s eat shan shan” is a very fluffy drama with zanilia zhao as lead. it’s slower, but very cute and humorous. a lot of people enjoy “love O2O” but I find the first episode kinda pretentious, so I have difficulty continuing.

      5. @rucofan1100 I liked IU & of course Lee Joon-Gi, but the plot was ALL over the place. it was an embarrassment to call it an adapted version of the Chinese one. The Chinese one was much more logical and less scattered.

      6. @rucofan1100 and @coralie lord lets not talk about scarlet heart… it was so disappointing..

if you haven’t watched “moon embrace the sun” kdrama.. go watch it.. it’s good. Sungkyunkwan Scandal was good too.. older kdrama but good story..

      7. @happybi haha, I was obsessed with moonlight drawn by clouds, but then MDBC got SO sappy on me, so I had to switch to something else to watch and got hooked on scarlet heart (K).

but man, SH was a disaster. I only watched it cus I’m a fan of IU & LGK (the brothers were cute too though.)

I tried Sungkyunkwan Scandal, but the main girl really annoyed me. a LOT of actresses try the whole ‘innocent’ look thing by widening their eyes and looking like a deer in the headlight. I see it a LOT. and they do it slowly. it’s pretentious and uber annoying. so I couldn’t finish it. even Chinese actress Sun Li does it every once in a while and she’s a seasoned veteran. I really wish they’d stop doing that thing.

      8. @coralie I have yet to watch Moonlight drawn by clouds.. I am not a PBG fan although I do love KYJ. SH was such a disappointment. What a waste of LJK. I couldn’t stand IU character as she was 10x weaker than CC character in the CDrama version! And I thought CC character was bad!

I actually like the girl from SS eheheheh think she’s a pretty good actress. I don’t mind the innocent look. hahahha

      9. @rucofan1100
Nirvana in Fire 2 will be out soon.
also recommend Ode to Joy, The Surgeons, The First Half of My Life , When a Snail Falls in Love, The King’s Woman.

      10. @msxie0714
The King’s Woman makes me cringe. I like DRB and ZBB as the main leads, but the plot itself turns me off. ZBB held DRB hostage and then tried to win her over. To me, that screams Stockholm syndrome. She had no choice but to fall for her captor. I couldn’t continue watching after that (plus, SO much political noise. like, really?)

Nirvana in Fire 2 also stars Huang Xiao Ming as main lead. Hard pass for me. He’s been looking really smarmy and smug as of late and I think it’s probably due to too many shots to the face. Plus, he ain’t the greatest actor either.

      11. @coralie
the king was an aggressive and forceful personality, so it was in line with his flawed character to abduct Li’er, especially after realizing she saved him in childhood. Aside from that, the production values were very high and much better than so many of those fantasy dramas. And ZBB was really a delight to watch!

Thankfully, HXM dies very quickly in NIF2. The other actors are worth watching, and I trust the integriety of this production team.

      12. @msxie0714 I know the production values were very high, but I can’t get over the crappy aspect of the plot. I just…can’t. and this is speaking from someone who appreciates both ZBB and DRB’s talents. I was greatly anticipating their collab, except the plot really let me down.

oh really? I thought HXM was going to be lead throughout; what a drag it’d be to watch that! maybe I’ll watch this then if he dies quickly in it 😀

      13. @tiffany ZBB was also very good in 3L3W as was DRB. Their collaboration was much anticipated on my end, but who knew the plot in TKW would turn me off so much?

      14. @coralie Dilreba was very good in her love scenes with ZBB, but lacking in everything else. She fits the cute and ditzy characters. She’s got to work on her expressions for the complexed type.

Just to add, I thought the post-production crew did a sloppy job. The flow was very choppy in the beginning.

      15. @rucofan1100 JOF is better in the sense that you still have some idea about what’s going on in the background. doesn’t require too much mental energy to decipher who’s who and what’s what.

I can bear with PA’s complicated political backdrop; I can tolerate PA’s fantasy + wuxia aspects; I can even accept the horrible dubbing. But what I can’t fathom, is why they chose Zanilia who looks like she’s 90 lbs in the drama, to be some sort of tough lara croft. it’s completely unrealistic and speaks volumes about what kind of vision the director had.

      16. @coralie I agree JOTF was slightly better, at least the music was very good. In Princess Agents, I just got the feeling like every single body only wanted to take part in the drama so they can bath in a show of billion viewers so they can get all the people to remember their faces. Because Zhao Li Ying is one who can draw many many viewers. So nobody cares what role they are playing, no matter who randomly and abruptly they will appear in the show, what purpose their character serves, or what the story is, as long as they pop up in that drama they’ll be remembered. So even though people are only playing some minor maids, they were kind of annoying because they don’t act like maids but those who seems to want attention. Zhao Li ying was used quite bad in Princess Agents, maybe Legend of Chusen too.
So I agree I also really like that one Nothing Gold Can Stay as well, because nobody acts annoying in there.I recommend that one.

      17. @davy yes, everyone had a purpose in Nothing Gold Can Stay, I appreciate that they’re not there just to drag the plot out or add some billing hours. I think majority of the drama was cohesive, although later parts of it did turn somewhat cliché.

    4. @rucofan1100 I think you just like more serious dramas so stay away from the idol dramas. Things you might be interested are: “The Advisors Alliance”, “Tribes & Empires”, and “The Rise of the Phoenix” which will be out soon towards the end of the year. They all revolve about ancient court politics which may be your cup of tea.

      1. @elizabeth No date yet. There was a problem with the production company vs Hunan. Apparently, Hunan bought the drama prior to the hit NIF. So, the price was cheaper than what Hu Ge is market for now.

  2. I remember Wrong Carriage, and it was a very very good show!!!

I highly and strongly doubt this new version will be any good at all, I’m not saying it will not be better, I’m actually believing it won’t even be a good drama.
The reason, in Huang Yi’s version, everything was very natural. Very little to no technology involved. The plot was very simple but it was a very hit because a lot of time, like Dream of the Red Chamber, you can totally see Chinese culture through that drama. You can see the beautiful sceneries and decorations of the ancient homes. At times, the places can look spooky because the wet forest was all real, and the dark bed rooms were real. When Tian Lei gave his new bride a tour of his house, that was amusing because of the natural places. Besides, the actors were too great at acting like people in ancient days, 70% of the time you fall in love with the ancient way and styles besides from just the storyline alone.

These new actors can’t act like ancient people at all, and always act like modern people, and the places for sure will not look natural enough because of technology. This is a drama that depends highly on natural stuff though, just like Huan Zhu Ge Ge. And, luckily in Fair Princess 2011 it already proved to us that not a single character was able to pull off to look “intelligent”, especially the new Zi Wei and Qing’er were only dumb and whiny. They tried extra hard to act like weak women, so they failed terribly. They were nothing except weak girls, they don’t look like naturally soft ancient women, but were overly pretentious extra cry babies. And then if they are too desperate to look strong then they started acting like modern people with democratic goals. The problem is, ancient people are NOT weak people whether it’s female or male, and they are also not people with modern ideologies yet either. Women were soft and polite but not stupid pigs. Du Biyan is very similar to Zi Wei who is intelligent and polite, but that doesn’t mean she’s a Mary Sue and dumbass. And Li Yuhu does seems similar to Xiao Yanzi, and as we know, very few actresses can play a role like that without terrible fake laughs and being hell-able annoying. Most recent Chinese dramas are now making the same mistakes whether they are remakes or not.

If this is only going to be 20-30% plagiarism, maybe it might pass as its own drama. But the original stuff is for sure unsurpassable.

    1. @davy totally agree. Dramas (especially ancient ones) these days, with the exception of Nirvana, just doesn’t have the same charm as it used too. New “actors” these days can’t really act…most of them are just idols and get a pass through their looks which are 99% surgically enhanced. They need to get more creative with their story telling. I mean.. mainland dramas basically have no budget yet it can’t seem to go above and beyond except for some few gems.

  3. Honestly don’t get Zhao Liying’s hype. She’s cute and all but her acting is not that good. I like Yuan Hong but I’m not sure it’s enough for me to watch this remake -__- please leave classics alone lol

    1. @karina I don’t understand it either, I know people hate Angela Baby so much because they believe she’s plastic. I am not an ABB fan, and yes her old pictures do not match her current self. I believe the plastic rumor too. But that is the same thing with Zhao Liying, her old pictures are different too. Especially anything more than 5 years ago.

Feng Shao Feng did not take any notice of her when they both played in 锁清秋, at that time Zhao Liying still looked a lot more like her own self. Yang mi was already popular at that time, nobody finds Zhao Liying to resemble Yang mi at all, if she does then people would call it out already. And then how come 2 years later, Yu Zheng took notice of her and let her starred in Palace II with a whole new makeover then people started calling her Yang mi? I don’t believe the bold claim that she is natural, sure her changes are not as obvious as ABB but the transformation to a Yang mi duplication was not because of only an eyebrow change. Her eyebrows were fixed in 镖行天下之牡丹阁 and she did not look like Yang mi in anyway or her current self.

      1. @davy

Care to share where you got the news about zanilla zhou looking like yang mi?

They look very different to me.

I started noticing zanilla zhou in the new version of the return of pearl princess. And she still looks the same in my opinion. Just older and more mature.

I like her be because she looks cute. Dont think her acting is the best but in comparison to some of the A line actress in China she sure is better.

      2. @1nit
I read it somewhere long ago, I can’t find that one picture anymore but Zhao Liying wore some Manchurian clothes with a middle hair split like Yang Mi (Qing Chuan), they looked very identical. Maybe they’re not too identical anymore since they’re both aging, but especially when she played in the one modern drama with Yang Mi’s husband, some netizens even joked on Viki she looked way too much like his wife.

She is already too skinny in 镖行天下之牡丹阁, but you can see the flaw of her face being wider, and she was not always beautiful at every single second. Now, at every single angle, there is no flaw anywhere at all and she’s look’in very pretty at every picture shots. Her skinnier waist did not lose more weight but it’s just her face that always lose weight, and how does one exercise their head, i don’t know. The width of a face and chin is not even based on fat but the bones, how do you make your bones shift anyway? I think she’d done some small enhancements but just not very obvious ones.

And God, Loura Lou does not look beautiful, not saying she’s ugly but I would not use the word “beautiful” or “pretty” to describe her while I thought both the main leads are supposed to be some great beauties in the novel. Take Chinese Paladin for example, all beautiful ladies together always make better success.

      3. @davy YM and ZLY do not look alike lol I don’t know if ZLY altered her looks, but YM did.

Currently, Dilreba is dubbed as YM’s successor.

      4. @tiffany

I use to think ZLY had minor work done prior to entering entertainment industry but sae her baby photos and she just have the same look. As in the same big round eyes and double eye lids. The round face. She doesn’t have the V shape chin that alot of people get PS for.

I know about dilireba the new yang mi. But thats not bcoz she look like Yang mi. I personally think dilireba prettier snd more natural.

Yang mi is pretty too just doesn’t look natural

      5. @1nit I think ZLY did get work done to her jawline. it used to look more squared shape but if you look at her recent pics it’s more “sharp”. very subtle and well done ps. I think to survive and be successful in this industry, actresses have a lot of pressure to get work done unfortunately.

      6. @karina

I thought she fit the description of a bun face. Extremely round lol… No square at all. Her face is thinner now coz she lost more weight for PA. I thought she looks better with a chubbier face

      7. @karina @1nit – I thought she had something done to her jawline too. in the movie, “The Palace AKA Palace: Lock Sinensis,” she acts as one of the villains. her face there is squarish and she had a wider jawline. of course, since then she’s also lost a ton of weight, so I don’t know if some of that weight loss has affected her facial structure. regardless, she has a really cute babyface, which influences her likeability. when it comes to more serious roles, though, I’m not sure she’s the right match for that kind of image. if you notice, her best hits were ones where she was in a “cute” role, HQG in JOF and SS in Boss & Me

      8. @coralie

Maybe in Palace movie, the female’s lead face is so small that ZLY face looks bigger n square? Im just comparing to the early career days 2011 to today. N in 2011 she doesn’t have square face. Her face is seriously round.

Unless she had injections to maintain her youthful appearance. And there were some sort of reactions during the time she filmed palace. Lol…

      9. @1nit no, because even when the main lead’s face wasn’t in the picture, ZLY still had a bigger face all on her own.

ruby lin also had a round face in My Fair Princess (and was semi cross-eyed.) but later on, she seems like she’s lost a ton of weight and got much slimmer. her face slimmed down too and doesn’t look so round anymore.

  4. I have taken a liking to Sebrina Chen Yao after Wuxin 1+2. I think she is quite young but has a lot of acting potential. I also quite like Zanilla as well.

  5. I would love to share my experience to every mother and to those who wished to be a mother someday. I have been in marriage for 13 yrs with no child of my own and my husband loved me so much that he never do things without me. We do almost everything together and that made my marriage so romantic and interesting for me but i have always worried about having my own kids even if it’s just one. My husband never seem to be worried or talked about it and it bothered me so much. I am really short of words of what happened later but i will try to put it in a short note because it’s my greatest joy on earth. Few years back my husband fell into the hand of a gold digger who tried to take him away from me. This lady manipulated my husband and he took her side and left home to stay with her for almost a year i was alone crying day by day waiting for him to call me and come back home until it got so bad that I couldn’t bear it anymore and i was about giving up on him because of these online Fake spell casters and Scams who rip off my money. This is certainly a shocking and genuine living Testimony of mine and it does goes on right now in my life. I came across some suggestions and i was convinced to work with this man after i expressed what i have been passing through to DR MUNA. He told me what i needed to know and requested for an ancient items he needed to work for me I cant get those items myself and i sent him some money for him to help me and hoping this is another Scam. But when DR MUNA called me and told me he is done with my work. My husband came back home with a surprised apology gift. I had him back and right till this moment we have loved each other again more and more and i am 6 months pregnant and i will be having my third child soon. This is an extraordinary blessing and to all soon to be a mother I am telling you nothing but my true life story and here his email ID [email protected] Whatsapp contact +2348071660388
