Alex Man and Lawrence Ng’s Fight Scene in “The Feud of Two Brothers” was Real
Lawrence Ng (吳啟華) nearly quit the show when he received the hard end of Alex Man’s (萬梓良) punches.
The classic 1986 TVB drama The Feud of Two Brothers <流氓大亨> is currently having its nightly rerun on TVB Jade, taking viewers back to trendy 1980’s Hong Kong. The popular drama starred Alex Man as police inspector Fong Kan-cheung, co-starring Carol Cheng (鄭裕玲), Carina Lau (劉嘉玲), Lawrence Ng, and Kathy Chow (周海媚).
Alex is known as a method actor and a dedicated performer, but sometimes that dedication went too far. In a fight scene between Alex and Lawrence for The Feud of Two Brothers, the actors originally had directions on how to throw their punches and were given instructions about the different camera angles, but Alex went too far during the fight, throwing real punches on Lawrence.
Lawrence’s frightened expression during the fight scene was real. When the scene ended, Lawrence was furious and impulsively told the director that “[he’s] quitting.” According to reports at the time, Alex stopped Lawrence by saying, “If you stop filming now, then you will ruin your future.” After some more thought, Lawrence decided to stay on the show.
Feeling apologetic, Alex reportedly purchased an antique watch for Lawrence as a gesture of apology.

Great series and one that is definitely worth re-watching (or watching for the first time for those who may not have seen this one previously). Personally, I’ve never been a fan of Alex Man’s acting and usually I watch his series for everyone else except him, but his performance in this one was truly good (still OTT but a little more restrained than a few of his other ones and the OTT moments actually make sense)…also the series overall was excellent – well-scripted, well-casted, well-acted and just plain well-produced (though the same thing can be said of majority of the series from back in those days) Really got to hand it to TVB (yes, rare praise moment for TVB, lol), as they’ve been selecting some really great classics to air in the midnight timeslot in recent months (though much of the praise also goes to HK01 for bringing the midnight timeslot series and many of their artists back to the forefront through their reporting). Hopefully TVB keeps this trend up and don’t do what they did 2 years ago where they failed to keep the momentum going with the midnight timeslot after the success of The Greed of Man re-run….after all, the midnight timeslot re-runs are pretty much the only TVB series worth watching nowadays….

I find Alex Man as one of a rare breed of actors who can single handedly hold a series on his own due to his dominating onscreen presence and charisma. The costars are less relevant because it’s assured that it will be a good series once we know Alex Man is leading. The ratio of classics he has starred in is the highest of any actor.
I bet Alex Man would not punch any other star. He just picked on Lawrence.
The problem with method actors is their reliance on emotion and they can’t control it and that’s the reason why Alex Man is well known for overacting.
