Current GF and Ex on Same Set, Kenneth Ma: “They Talk A Lot!”

Deep in the Realm of Conscience <宮心計2深宮計> may have ended its run, but a lot of people are still talking about the show’s interesting casting choices. On the show, palace general Yam Sam-shu (Kenneth Ma 馬國明) is in a relationship with the palace maid Kam Yeuk-chin (Jacqueline Wong 黃心穎), but he’s also had a past with Empress Wang (Nancy Wu 胡定欣), making the situation awkward. This almost perfectly reflects the trio’s real life situation, as both Kenneth and Nancy used to be in a relationship.

“[Nancy and Jacqueline] actually talk to each other more than they talk to me.” said Kenneth. “You’ll be surprised!”

No Marriage Plans with Jacqueline Yet

The media endearingly likes to describe Kenneth as a boring, wooden homebody who doesn’t know anything about fashion, but still a gentleman nonetheless. On how he managed to capture Jacqueline’s heart, Kenneth said, “I honestly don’t think I’m a boring person. I know what to do on certain situations. I’ll take my time and effort. I’m not that wooden of a person! When a girl is trying to drop hints, I’ll get them. For example, if they mention about something they like while we’re out dating, I’ll take note of it. She would actually think I have good memory. When you truly care for her, she can feel it.”

Kenneth said Jacqueline has already gotten his parents’ approval. “She has a very healthy image. My parents aren’t very picky—as long as the girl is polite and simple, they’ll be okay with it. My parents have a good impression of her.”

What about marriage? Kenneth said that’s still too soon. “I don’t think it’s time yet. I don’t know when it’s going to happen. Perhaps it’s all about timing and hitting the right spot. She’s still young and there’s still many things she hasn’t tried yet. She just filmed her first drama as lead, and she has another one coming up. It’s normal. She’s still young, so I’m sure she’s not thinking about marriage or kids yet.”

Kenneth, however, is already 44 years old. While many of his peers are already married or thinking about starting a family, Kenneth is taking the backseat. He assures that his parents haven’t been rushing him—and he’s also not in a rush. “I have an older sister who is married with kids, so my mother already has grandchildren. However, when I do get married in the future, I would definitely want to have kids if my wife wants to. Maybe one or two. I haven’t planned it.”

Still Good Friends with Nancy

Just as how Yam Sam-shu and Empress Wang used to be lovers, Kenneth and Nancy also used to be in a relationship. It wasn’t until after they separated when news broke out that the two used to date.

“A lot of people now probably know that Nancy and I used to date,” said Kenneth. “We didn’t break up because of a third person. It wasn’t a bad split either—we just started to realize that we weren’t for each other. Maybe because I was still young and immature, but since we didn’t think alike, maybe it would be better if we stayed as friends, and that’s exactly what happened. We got along much better as friends. In fact, we’re much more opened to each other now. We talk about everything. There are many things where I would just talk to Nancy about and no one else. When she comes across a problem, she would ask for my advice. We trust each other in keeping secrets, so I would definitely say that Nancy and I are great friends, and I cherish her deeply.”

During location photography in Hengdian World Studios, Kenneth would spend his free time with Nancy and Jacqueline. Asking if there were any awkwardness between the two, Kenneth said, “They actually talk a lot. When we’re eating, I’m usually the one who is sitting at the side while they’re chattering away. In a way, I guess they’re both quite similar, so they have many similar things to talk about.”
