Will HK Native, Lucas Wong, Make It Big in K-pop?

Since the second peak of the Hallyu made its wave across Asia in the 2010’s, several Hong Kong natives have left a mark in the K-pop industry. First came 24-year-old Jackson Wang (王嘉爾), who made his debut through the JYP Entertainment boy group GOT7 in 2014. The second high-profile K-pop debut was by 19-year-old Elkie Chong (莊錠欣) in 2016, former TVB child star, who is currently a member of the girl group CLC from Cube Entertainment.

But Jackson and Elkie aren’t the only Hong Kong artists known in K-pop. This past March, 19-year-old Hong Kong teen Lucas Wong (黃旭熙) made his debut as one of the newest members of the boy group NCT U, debuting with the song “Boss.” NCT U and its flagship group NCT are managed by S.M. Entertainment, home to K-pop legends such as TVXQ (東方神起), Girls’ Generation (少女時代), and EXO.

Being the younger brothers of such hugely successful K-pop stars, NCT has a lot to live up to. And for Lucas, that also includes his seniors Jackson Wang and Elkie Chong, both who are quickly gaining popularity across Asia.

But success doesn’t seem far – with his recent appearances in variety shows such as Knowing Bros. and Idol Star Athletics Championship, Lucas may just be the next Hong Kong star to breakout in K-pop.

Son of a Chinese father and a Thai mother, Lucas speaks five languages (Cantonese, Mandarin, English, Korean, and Thai). With his hilarious personality and good looks, the 19-year-old is quickly gaining traction among netizens in Korea. His appearance on Idol Star Athletics Championship is also giving Lucas widespread media attention, in which he, alongside ASTRO member Eunwoo, are being dubbed “the strongest visual duo” on the show.

With his following growing larger by the second, will Lucas make it big in K-pop?
