Fala Chen’s Debut Short Wins Hong Kong Short Film at 2018 Sundance
Former TVB actress and Juilliard graduate, Fala Chen (陳法拉), has won the Hong Kong Short Film Competition with her short film Passengers <人來人旺>.
In the short film, also directed by Fala, she plays a homeless person begging in a bridge. Fala had on no makeup, did not wash her hair, and wore old clothes. She was unrecognizable.
“There was no budget,” said Fala. “Whether it was the editing, directing, acting, to even hair and makeup, it was all by myself. It’s very satisfying.”
TVB actor Law Lok-lam (羅樂林) guest stars in the short film as her father. Ng Siu-hin (吳肇軒) also guest stars.
“For my first project, ‘my father’ yelled out a series of profanity. He told me that it was a breakthrough performance for him. I’m so thankful for their help.”
The short film competition, hosted by the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, accepted submissions from April to June 2018. The Jury panel included Sundance executives and Mad World <一念無明> director Wong Chun (黃進).

Impressive! I hope people learn from Fala that a budget is NOT important for good storytelling. TVB should learn from her.
