Too Creepy? Ruco Chan Bought Burial Sites for Phoebe Sin and Himself

Tying the knot in October, Ruco Chan (陳展鵬) and Phoebe Sin (單文柔) have been all smiles since announcing their engagement. While planning for the wedding, it is reported that Ruco has also started looking at burial sites for Phoebe and himself. It looks like the 41-year-old actor is already planning for the future, and wants to decide what to do with their remains when they pass away.

Although Ruco has only dated Phoebe for two years, he already had marriage plans early in their relationship. Last year, Ruco bought a condo worth over $10 million HKD under his mother’s name so the couple would have a place to live after getting married. Recently, Ruco also paid over $2 million HKD for a total of 10 burial sites for his family, including one for his future wife, at a columbarium to entomb cremated ashes.

On Ruco’s gesture to show Phoebe that he will take care of her until the very end, the 28-year-old actress said she was not aware of the purchase. Phoebe said, “Ruco didn’t mention about it before. I just know that marriage is a happy occasion, and I didn’t think that far ahead. Right now, I’ve only thought about my wedding plans and how to be a pretty bride. This is a once in a lifetime event after all.” Asked if Ruco had spent $2 million HKD on the burial sites, Phoebe said “I’ve never talked to him about this; maybe you should ask and then let me know instead. I want to know too.”

Although uncertain if Ruco did purchase the burial sites, Phoebe complimented her fiancé for being thoughtful. Phoebe said “When he’s working, he becomes very serious. I think that side of him is really cute.”

  1. Burial sites are like real estate. The value only increases, and never decreases over time.

Our family (and extended family) bought a total of 10 plots (2 persons per plot) when the value of the estate was low. It has gone up by nearly 300% in less than 10 years.

When we bought it, My sis and I were in our 20’s.

Ditto. Nothing bizarre – it’s a thoughtful gesture.

My great grandma pre-bought burial plots for herself, and my parents. She also left them houses (ie real ones! :p)

Unfortunately … the plots were taken back in land reclamation (with little or not compensation).

Dad was cremated, and ashes in an urn.

  2. What is so creepy about a man wanting to buy a burial plot for his future wife. Everyone around the world do it everyday, including rich and famous people. The media are acting like spoil, little, silly children.

  3. Death is a part of life, no one lives forever. Nothing is wrong with planning ahead, but this is way too far ahead. Maybe he should wait a year or two after getting married, but than again, no one knows what tomorrow will hold … so why put off what you can do today.

  4. Instead of wasting land on burying people, hows about donating organs, and crimation? There is thinking and planning ahead, and there is too controlling. If he has done it before knowing her, fair enough, but buying it when he’s about to marry to her is a bit too much lol. Also… couldn’t he wait a few years? He’s rich enough that a few percent increase in a few year wouldn’t matter!

  5. Most people want to be buried, not cremated. How about respecting people’s last wishes and burying them. Respecting someone’s last wish of how they want to be buried is more important than worrying about wasting land. Has it occurred to anyone that Phoebe and Ruco might’ve discussed and agreed to this before he actually bought the burial plot?

in today’s world of environmental challenges, insisting on burials is selfish when land is getting scarce for the living. concern about wasted resources and future generations is far more important than traditional practices of ground burials.

      1. @msxie0714 agreed. I read a report about how NY is having a huge issue with finding burial sites since land is so expensive. they’re starting to overturn “expired” burial grounds & selling them off to new occupants.

this might be easier to do in NY where it’s not steeped in superstitions and familial piety. but in HK & China, where traditions rule the roost, I don’t think it’d be that easy.

    2. @kmfayb last wish is such a intangible thing. Think of your children, how they have to work their butt off, and might still not be able to own a place to raise their children. When you die, you become nothing, what you left is your legacy, if your legacy is a pile of wasted land, it’s no wonder we are heading where we are! Little thoughts here and there will help the next generations because they definitely need it.

  6. I think Ruco is a smart and savvy character. Why put things off when they will need to be done anyway? Maybe it was the right price and he had the means then. After marriage, there will be other things that may delay the decision to buy. Good on him! As a wife or girlfriend, I’d want him to share his thinking and discuss what should be done instead of making all the decisions without my input. But of course, that comes from someone who thinks as well. I’m sure some girls are perfectly happy for all the decisions to be made for them.

  7. The article said he bought 10 sites. I wonder if he was buying them for his aging parents and just bought others for himself and his wife. It is practical and somewhat sweet.

I think the older generation prefer burial. They grew up visiting grave sites and feel more connected to the deceased ancestors that way.

I prefer to be cremated. Take the money and travel the world instead.

  8. Not creepy at all. It’s like Chan family mosuleum. Except it isn’t really romantic. LIke he will say darling I bought you a burial plot next to me. Imagine evil laughter. Girl probably thinking what happened to diamond ring as gifts.

But no, not creepy. Quite thoughtful, like eternal planning. Except if they divorced, she can’t be buried there so phoebe might still need to invest in her own burial plot.

I wonder tho did he buy some for future children? Or children be like go buy your own plot?

Yes one must concentrate on planning weddings. Not worried about such stuff. She is quite free, not busy working anyway. No, I mean she will be Mrs Ruco Chan, that’s a job too.

    1. @funnlim she is busy planning her wedding to be a beautiful bride of Ruco Chan. Now that he has formally announced their relationship, Phoebe is now his official arm candy.

  9. If reports are true then Ruco is even more traditional than I had initially thought. Even if he was born in the early 1900’s then his personality would fit rather well. I can’t believe Ruco is getting blind praise for buying burial plots of dirt space in this day and age where the world has progressed through science and technology. Maybe Ruco should use his excess money to help people around him or offer something useful to society like Louis koo in helping people living in poverty than use it to satisfy his superstitions and ancient beliefs….

    1. @jimmyszeto having a man who plans the future is a nice gesture…but buying burial plots? land space is so limited. besides, his wedding is approaching. I don’t think his young wife would think of death and burial plots at this point. I would like to have a guy who plans the future but involves the girlfriend/wife in their decision making.

  10. Wow, I know some who have bought burial plots for their loved ones and they dont get the boorish, childish grief about it like Ruco is getting. Patriachs have bought plots for even their grandchildren who are just toddlers. Maybe Ruco wants to have things in order cause things can happen in an instance and he wants certain things in place. I am young, strong and healthy. I’ve already written my will and chosen my plot for burial. I guess that makes me traditional and superstitious too, although I have no patience for superstition, or old school backward traditions, and do a lot of donation.

  11. It’s not creepy for someone his age and with elderly parents to plan ahead to buy these burial plots but it is creepy considering the fact that right now he is in the midst of planning his wedding. Imagine him saying to his bride “I love you to death and I want us to be buried together when we die” lol. Doesn’t sound at all romantic to me. Anyways I read somewhere that some people in HK buy these burial plots as a form of investment since these will get scarcer in future and the price can only go up Maybe it’s more for investment purpose and in the end he will opt for cremation and sea burial, who knows? Btw I think these “plots” the article is referring to may actually be just niches and not plots of land.

  12. awww that is so sweet. It may appear weird, but if this is true, it’s quite meaningful. Totally see a different side of Ruco. ^^
