Ali Lee is Confident in Winning Best Actress; Kenneth Ma Wants Money Instead

Kenneth Ma (馬國明) and Ali Lee (李佳芯) attended a press conference to promote their upcoming drama Big White Duel <白色強人>. The drama, which is supposed to broadcast next year, also stars Roger Kwok (郭晋安), Natalie Tong (唐詩詠), and Kelly Cheung (張曦雯). With the 2018 TVB Anniversary Awards rolling around, reporters took the chance to ask Kenneth and Ali for their thoughts on sweeping an award.

Ali, who won Best Actress for her performance in Legal Mavericks <踩過界> at the 2017 Starhub TVB Awards, expressed confidence in winning the TV Queen title for her performance in Who Wants a Baby? <BB 来了>. “I think I need to give myself self-confidence. From my experience, it’s important to believe in myself because I worked so hard for the drama and I made sacrifices,” she explained. “But I do think that all actors made sacrifices for their dramas so everyone deserves it.” However, she said it would all have to depend on the situation and the company. “A lot of things can’t be calculated,” Ali said.

On the other hand, Kenneth, who’s been nominated for Best Actor in the past but never won, said he prefers money instead of awards. “I want more money; hopefully the company will hear my request. I don’t have enough money to spend,” Kenneth said. “Money is more practical.”

He explained that he doesn’t have any upcoming dramas broadcasting this year and his only drama was Deep in the Realm of Conscience <宮心計2深宮計>. “Actually, I don’t even know if I was the main or supporting character in Deep in the Realm of Conscience,” Kenneth added.

Jokingly, he said there’s only one award so if there’s prize money for everyone, then everyone will be happy. “[The TV King] is probably not me,” he said honestly. “I’m not disappointed, maybe I can see if I can request to not attend the awards. I rather make money if there’s no award. I need my prize money, it’s a very simple concept in this industry.”

When asked about his recent vacation to Samui Island in Thailand with his girlfriend, Jacqueline Wong (黃心穎), he revealed she yelled at him for taking bad photos of her. However, Kenneth said he improved a lot already.

  1. I don’t know… I guess he is trying to be funny, but I always find Kenneth’s interviews awkward. There is practical truth in what he said but if anyone else had said the same, they would have been raked over the coals for sounding greedy and flippant.

    1. @potatochip I think he’s just being honest, which is one of the things I like about his personality (for the record —I’m definitely not a fan of his..he falls within the “neutral” category for me as far as TVB artists go, meaning that I neither like nor dislike him overall). I agree though that his interviews often come off awkward because a lot of times he just blurts out what’s on his mind (most of the time unfiltered) and the person interviewing him probably got caught off guard (since most HK reporters / media people are likely used to artists beating around the bush and using fancy language to “not” answer the questions being asked, lol). Besides, this isn’t the first time that Kenneth has said he prefers money over awards so at least he’s consistent in his answers, lol. 🙂

      1. @llwy12 I am neutral on him too. He has an adorkable charm that helps me overlook the inconsistencies in his acting.

But it was this interview and previous interviews where he sounds skeevy that makes me flinch. About his new medical drama he says he “wants to play a gynecologist” and likes having “pretty girls to look at”. In DITROC he talks about the “easy on the eyes” “fit and beautiful” actresses and being able to “Chrissie’s shoulders”.

I get that these are attempts at compliments or jokes, but they are off-putting to me. Eh, he is still reasonably likable, but this is why I feel he can be awkward.

  2. Sorry, as much as I like Ali and she’s probably one of he best “fadans” of today, her performance in “Who Wants a Baby?” is not TV Queen worthy at all. She did a very god job in it though. I forgot Kenneth was even in a drama this year and it was nothing special.

    1. @birdy2415 I agree….that was actually one of the few TVB series I watched this year (not in its entirety though) and I honestly didn’t feel Ali’s performance was anything special…in fact, I thought her performance overall was too exaggerated, like she was trying too hard to be convincing as a wife and mother (which perhaps might have been intentional since she is neither one in real life). I actually found Claire Yiu’s performance as the non-traditional nanny to be a lot more convincing and natural…ultimately though, in my opinion at least, Angelina Lo and Rebecca Chan were really the ones who carried the show with their (expectedly) excellent performances….

  3. The beautifull thing of the artist Kenneth Ma is he always say thing that on his mind.

Thats why he never gained more points at Tvb.
He is to honest to work in the entertainement industry

If he want to earn more money, he must go learn mandarin.

Always like him to play characters in period And ancient time.

Maybe he need the money to prepare his BIG DAY!!!
    Haha!!

    Cheers Kenneth!!

PS: nothing to say about Ali Lee.
    She is perfect!!

  4. I would rather have money too. If he did not win for his role last year as Siu Ma which was a fantastic performance, I doubt he would win for his role this year in DITROC which I thought was so-so.

  5. Siu ma we great And superb!!

But i most like was his character
    Fuk Tsuen
“the life of time as a sentinel”

That was his first villain rol. amazing!!

Then his part in Truth was also great!!

Maybe I like more sneaky funny villain Kenneth !!
