“Ruyi’s Royal Love in the Palace” Rewrites Novel’s 18+ Scene
Ruyi’s Royal Love in the Palace <如懿传> is approaching its grand finale, and after watching 80 episodes of Ruyi and the Qianlong Emperor moving towards a relationship decay, viewers and fans alike have had enough of the Qianlong Emperor’s selfishness.
In a recent episode, the emperor (portrayed by Wallace Huo 霍建華) gathers seven of the capital city’s most famous prostitutes for a night of fun. His wife Ruyi (portrayed by Zhou Xun 周迅) was invited to join, but Ruyi, of course, coldly turns down the emperor’s invitation.
Apparently, this scene from the original novel was much more raunchy. In the original novel, one of the most famous prostitutes of Jiangnan, known as “Shuimuping,” was invited to the palace to serve the Qianlong Emperor. She brought along her close friends, also prostitutes, to the palace. Every night, the emperor and the girls would have group sex, and those scenes were written in explicit detail in the novel.
When Ruyi arrives, the emperor tells her, “My queen has also come tonight to have fun. Come, play with me.” Those words caused Ruyi so much anger that she tells her maidservants to cut the dragon totems on the prostitutes’ outfits as a silent warning. Clearly intoxicated, the emperor responds, “I just wanted them to come sing me the songs of the people.” He then starts to make more excuses for himself, saying, “I never grew up in the outside world so I am curious to see how women who are not from the court are like.”
According to history, the Qianlong Emperor visited the outside world a total six times while disguising himself as a merchant. Rumors say he did mingle with prostitutes, and showered them with gifts.
