Ruco Chan vs Vincent Wong: Who Will Be This Year’s TV King?

Only two episodes of  TVB Anniversary series, Fist Fight <兄弟> , has aired. The drama has been met with neutral reviews with the audience criticizing that there is no flow and the many action scenes are disjointed. On the flip side, many commented that Vincent Wong‘s (王浩信) portrayal of his arrogant character revealed a new layer to his acting skills.

As it is nearing the end of the year, there are speculations over which actor will win the TV King award. With Vincent’s performance in an Anniversary series, many are wondering whether he will be able to win for the second time. However, Fist Fight will not have finished its broadcast by the time the awards ceremony takes place. In the last 20 years, only Dayo Wong (黃子華) was able to win the prestigious award without his series finishing its broadcast.

There are no clear leaders for the fight for this year’s TV King. However Vincent does have one strong rival: Ruco Chan (陳展鵬).

The first time the pair butted heads was in 2015; Vincent had just made his debut as male lead in Brick Slaves <樓奴> and Ruco’s drama Captain of Destiny <張保仔> received great reviews. However, in the end they both lost the TV King award to Anthony Wong (黃秋生). In 2016, Vincent’s performance in Over Run Over <EU超時任務> was met with great success but this was trumped by Ruco’s A Fist Within Four Walls <城寨英雄> which eventually paved the path for him to win TV King. Lastly in 2017, Ruco’s drama The Unholy Alliance <同盟> received the highest ratings of the year but Vincent’s triumvirate of My Unfair Lady <不懂撒嬌的女人>, Legal Mavericks <踩過界>, and Heart of Greed 3 <溏心風暴3> ultimately led him to win TV King. As of now, both are tied with one award to their name.

This year, they both have only one drama in the running but it is rumored that Ruco will not attend this year’s ceremony and that there are disagreements between himself and TVB management. It seems that Vincent’s main rival may be out of the running!

  1. Well Ruco is trying to buy the award by announcing his wedding and allowing coverage of his wedding by TVB’s Big Big Channel. Also Shaun Tam is dark horse since he has signed a very long contract and it would the correct business decision to promote its own ‘current and future’ lead. If based on acting alone then Vincent should win…

  2. Doubt TVB will give it to either. Ruco seems to be in cold storage for most of this year but rumours were flying around that he gave access to TVB to cover his wedding in exchange for the award. As for Vincent, his performance in Fist Fight is no different from his previous smart alecky characters. I agree with the comments regarding the drama. I think TVB will be banking on a new TV king this year. Nothing to do with acting btw.

  3. To me , fist fight is just meh so far . Nothing really special . I’m guessing Life on the line will win big in the award if fist fight turned out to be a flop

  4. If between the two, I’m for Vincent all the way. I am watching an old drama “Coffee Cat Mama” and wow what a difference a few years can make in status. Even back then, Vincent was convincing acting in a role completely opposite his personality. It cemented my love for him now even more because i can SEE not only his improvements, but that he can do multiple roles very well.

With that said, this year hasn’t been a great drama year. I felt like every drama was mediocre for the most part and most acting was done with very little effort. The one actor who has stood out to me the most happens to be non-TVB breed: Carlos Chan. If anyone deserves the award, it’s him. Not even my beloved Vincent Wong makes the list (though I haven’t watched his newest drama yet).

    1. @coralie Well-said! My vote actually goes to Carlos as well this year, though of course we all know he’s not going to get it for sure (I’m still hoping for at least some recognition, like maybe Favorite Character or something like that, but even that is doubtful). This year has definitely been a lackluster year for TVB (not that the previous couple years have been that much better but this year was particularly dismal). The only series broadcast on TVB that I remember chasing and being excited about was Story of Yanxi Palace but of course that wasn’t a TVB-produced series so it doesn’t count technically. The sad thing is that from the looks of things so far (after seeing the proposed lineup for 2019 with the recent Sales Presentation), next year isn’t looking that great either. I wouldn’t be surprised if, in a couple years, the Anniversary Awards goes down the path JSG awards did, where it went from a prestigious, sought-after award to something that no one cares whether they even give out anymore or not….

  5. To echo some of the previous users, I, too, wouldn’t mind seeing Vincent take home another win, though I’m not particular thrilled about any of the main contenders this year. God forbid Benjamin gets crowned…

Praying that by some miracle, Carlos will end up with the award, and this moment will go down as one of TVB’s least expected, most deserving wins in history, lol.

  6. I think both are great actors who are capable of portraying diverse roles.

I haven’t seen Vincent’s new series yet, so I can’t comment on this role. I did watch Ruco’s and I really enjoyed Succession War. It was beautifully filmed with an unpredictable storyline and many intriguing characters. Ruco had many fantastic moments that were award worthy, but unfortunately, it wasn’t completely cohesive. Whether this is due to him having trouble defining the character, the overly ambitious and unfocused writing, the pre-conceived ideas on the historical figure, or part of everything above, it is still unlikely going to win him Best Actor.

I would be very surprised if SW won anything. Although with many great characters, only 2 were actually likeable where I wanted them to have a happy ending (Selena and Stephanie Ho’s). The drama had the lowest ratings of the year. It seemed to be poorly promoted (no opening theme song, airing right after a similar royalty drama, conflicted with the World Cup). Was it even shown in China?

Which is a shame because it had some great acting. Selena should win something for her kind but strong, regal queen.

I know the rumor is that Ruco traded filming his wedding for the award, but that seems far-fetched to me. I am not in Hong Kong, but was the coverage that much more than the other actors’ weddings? From what I can tell from Jaynestar and Instagram, it didn’t seem much more than Christine Kuo’s or Tiffany Tang’s. If he wanted to use his wedding for his career, he wouldn’t have had it on a yacht to avoid paparazzi. He wouldn’t have had it conflict with Poon Ka Tak’s 70th birthday. He would have invited more TVB artists and bigwigs instead of his old ATV colleagues.

He seems at peace and happy with his marriage and upcoming baby. He is finally relaxing. He isn’t being promoted by TVB at all. If anything, I think they are setting up Benjamin Yuen or perhaps Joe Ma for the win. There is more press coverage on them lately.

    1. @potatochip If the rumors are true that Ruco Chan won’t be attending the TVB Anniversary Awards, I suspect his contract may be nearing its end and he is planning his exit from the station.

TVB has a habit of not promoting an artiste if they are currently renegotiating contract terms and his future loyalty is unclear. Seeing Ruco being underutilized in 2018 and perhaps 2019 may be signs that he may not be interested in renewing his contract if it is nearing its end.

Vincent looks to have a higher chance at Best Actor. Not sure if TVB will give it to Joe Ma since he is only filming on a per contract basis.

    2. @potatochip yes the coverage was very extensive and all done live from morning to night and then for the after party too. Wedding on yacht to avoid the paps? Doubt so. He was more than happy to publicise his wedding to the whole world with a high profile announcement and he even handed out pre-wedding photos to the media. For someone who claimed to want to keep it low profile it was the polar opposite. Go to big big channel and check it out. No one had that much coverage as them, so much so that it felt like watching a reality show.. If he really wanted it low profile as he claimed, do what Kevin Cheng did and decline all media coverage. He even showed TVB the door when they tried to gatecrash his party and wedding, no need to give TVB face. Afterwards he provided only a few photos to the media and did a coupe of short interviews. That is called low profile.

      1. @passingby
Ruco timed it all and announced his wedding on Big Big Channel and they pretty much gave them full coverage on the day. His talk about being himself being very traditional, protective of his girlfriend and low profile is a load of rubbish. He obviously chooses whatever is advantageous to himself. There are plenty of bigger stars with weddings but they didn’t turn their weddings into reality shows. Kevin’s and Grace are much bigger stars but kept it low profile. I guess most wives would be pissed off if the husband used the wedding to promote himself but Phoebe seems an obedient passive non decision maker plus she may welcome the exposure since her biggest exposure is clapping on Cooking Beauties. She wasn’t even good enough to be a contestant.

      2. @jimmyszeto Agreed.

Weddings are very personal to the newly weds. Why did Ruco choose to make his wedding as a reality show???!!! For money or for awards?? Definitely not only for exposure. Will find out soon.

      3. @orchid123
Same thing really.Exposure can mean awards and money. Endorsements and brands only come calling to hot trending celebrities. They won’t come as much for a celebrity who has shown no breakthrough in last few series. If I was an endorser, would I choose the upcoming the hot trending younger and energetic Carlos Chan or the older, traditional Ruco who has not had a hit for a while. It’s a no brainer, Carlos. But if Ruco is suddenly all over the Big Big Channel for a few weeks with his high profile wedding then as an endorser, I’ll target Ruco instead. That’s how it works….

      4. @jimmyszeto I am in agreement with you. Ruco is a fraud. He obviously craved the media attention that followed his announcement and was more than happy to give interviews after interviews. Same goes for his wife who is riding on his coattails. As u pointed out, much bigger stars have opted for low profile weddings though the media would have happily given them the coverage if they had wanted it. His extensive wedding coverage was really unprecedented for a celebrity wedding and was of cos done with his full approval.

      5. @passingby
It is normal in the west for famous power couples to sell exclusive wedding photo coverage to magazines such as ‘ok’. It is a representation of their status. However, the Asia situation is different. Most couples will keep their weddings private as respect for the wife and the elderly. Maybe the really powerful celebrities cannot avoid a bit of coverage but a couple as lowly as Ruco and Phoebe in the entertainment industry are only looking for exposure and opportunities to boost their short term paychecks. Ruco is only known in the ATV and TVB circle and Phoebe is not recognised anywhere. Nearly every Hong Kong celebrity couple who have married recently have kept a low profile. Ruco though demonstrated his supposed protectiveness for his girlfriend for the past year suddenly goes 360 degrees full on Big Big Channel announcement and wedding coverage. There is only one motive for this and that is to keep his name relevant and congratulations he has succeeded. If it wasn’t for the big wedding then the Ruco of 2018 would have been less popular of the one of 2017 but he has managed to tactically change this. The last person to make such a big deal of a wedding was Wong Cho Lam who proposed during TVB anniversary but at least he is less of a hypocrite since he kept a high profile during their whole dating process and after marriage too.

      6. @jimmyszeto Your observations are spot on. In 2017 and 2018 Ruco was making news only for his personal life, with not much to show for his professional life. Going high profile for his wedding enabled him to stay in the public’s minds; otherwise he would soon be forgotten. Yet he pretended that he wanted to keep it low profile. Kevin Cheng is a man with a lot more class in comparison, at least he meant what he said.

      7. @jcc10
I didn’t say Ruco timed the marriage. He publicised his wedding on purpose. You made a great point though. Usually couples with a baby on the way keep their weddings even more low profile. He can’t say this time that he gave full coverage of his wedding to Big Big Channel for his mother this time. Usually Ruco uses his filialness towards his mother or how much he protects his girlfriend as reasons for his behaviour. What can he come up with now as a reason? He’ll probably say he did it for the fans or it was in demand. It’s embarrassing. Who are Ruco and Phoebe? Over the years we’ve had Frankie/Kenix,Him/Tavia, Hawick/Yang Mi, Kevin/Grace, Moses/Aimee. Even potential future weddings of Kenneth/Jacqueline and Edwin/Priscilla are much more massive…..

      8. @jimmyszeto @passingby I admit, I misspoke. Being outside of Hong Kong, I didn’t know his wedding was that heavily broadcasted. But this is a function of supply and demand. If there was no interest, BigBig Channel would not have covered it. Seems to be in a no win situation. He is criticized for not interacting and marketing himself enough, but then when he does, he is deemed embarrassing.

I still don’t think this was a trade for the Best Actor award. But it was a savvy play to boost his popularity level back to before he started dating Phoebe. It wasn’t about getting in TVB’s good graces, but a much bigger picture of having the public view him and his wife more positively. There is nothing wrong with that desire and it is quite intelligent to turn a happy event into something more long lasting.

      9. @potatochip Trade or not is open to speculation. However fact remains, as Jimmy and i hv pointed out, that Ruco says one thing but does another, in other words he’s totally fake.

      10. @potatochip
It is up to opinion whether Ruco exchanged the wedding broadcast for an award but he has definitely done it for money and he is currently picking plenty. More will come in the next year or so riding off the baby. Now he and his wife can turn into a double act for events since he has now helped broadcast his wife from a nobody to a known face. There was a little demand for TVB viewers, yes. TVB have plenty of platforms, channels and online so broadcasting his wedding will generate a bit more buzz since their series have been failing lately. I’m not questioning that this is not a good move. It’s very clever of Ruco because he needs to make himself relevant again but I’m pointing out he is not the great person he tried to build himself to be. Using marriage announcements and selling wedding coverage are using his wife and baby to move himself back up the ladder. Not the best morals…

      11. @jimmyszeto @passingby I think you guys are being too harsh on Ruco. You may not like him and find him disingenuous, but saying he does not have the best morals is unfair. He is obviously loyal as seen by the dedication to his long term friends and fans. He is a good son, has a hard working work ethic that led to his success as a young ping pong star to persevere in a 20+ year acting career, and his romantic life has been private until he introduced the public to his life-long commitment, Phoebe. These are “traditional” traits.

He was unknown throughout most of his career and only in the last 7-8 years has been noticed for his talent. He was like Ben Wong who you say is “happy to just act” and waited his turn to be promoted. You tell him to promote himself, well he did. After being mismanaged and in cold storage by TVB for over a year at the peak of his career, he took advantage of the given publicity for his wedding. It is not something you or I may do, but how is that evil? How do you think he should promote himself?

Also, if he wanted to be more fame hungry, he could leech off of more popular or famous actresses. He could become a celebrity power couple. But he chose a “nobody” because she was the right fit for him.

Yeah, I get that you don’t like him. That’s perfectly fine, but again, saying he does not have the best morals is quite an insulting stretch.

      12. @potatochip
The difference is that when Ben Wong became a lead his personality always stayed the same. Ben should probably come out and shake some hands to meet and greet the fans more to make himself more known.Where did you get the information that Ruco has been in cold storage? That is such a false statement you have made there. Ruco has been casted as lead in all the big series every year in the last half dozen years. He just hasn’t made further progress in his acting and saw that he was getting surpassed. Instead of fighting back by working hard he used his private life to get him back level with the current emerging stars. Die hard Ruco fans will bound to praise him for being ‘savvy’ but I call his actions ‘cutting corners’ and trying to gain an advantage in exposure using underhand methods. Working hard and being filial are basic traits that human beings should have. No need to overpraise him just because he is Ruco Chan. At least you admit that he used the wedding to promote himself. There’s nothing more to discuss if you believe that’s the right thing to do.

      13. @potatochip “after being mismanaged and in cold storage by tvb”…..hmm idk where you got that info from. Wasn’t he the one who asked for a long break? In the meantime other artistes got the opportunities that could have been his. Don’t tell me that TVB is obliged to wait for him to return to work and offer him those roles? I didn’t say what he did in using his wedding for publicity was evil. I said it was hypocritical. If you’re fine with his hypocrisy, by all means.. However there’s nothing I despise more than a hypocrite. If he hadn’t pretended that he wanted to be low profile but jumped at the chance for extensive publicity then no one can fault him for the media coverage given to his wedding and turning his wedding into a reality show.

      14. @potatochip FYI, not he didn‘t invited artistes but not many artistes wanted to take part in his wed nor the after party.

Not he choose a “nobody” because she was the right fit for him but she is pregnant and she is obedient. Don‘t forget what did he do to her when they have been first caught. He coverred his face and left her alone.

      15. Don’t think Ruco needs all this backlash on his wedding. He was just happy to get married and wanted to give Phoebe a memorable wedding. Yes, he did forward some wedding photos to the HK media and accepted some interviews on his wedding day.

Those who don’t like him to begin with will just see it in a negative light as “selling his wedding for publicity”, but I find that it’s a welcome gesture to share happiness on his big day with everyone, including his fans.

If Ruco had clammed up and refused all interviews, those who don’t like him will just say he was sour-faced even on his wedding day.

Suffice to say that it’s his wedding and he’s allowed to celebrate in big or small way to his taste. No need to judge him based on his wedding preference, when his character can be observed from the treatment of fans who have supported him for 20+ years, his respect towards veterans, and his value towards friends. He could have “opened up” his wedding even more as a vehicle for his TVB career by inviting a lot more TVB management, but he chose to invite old ATV friends instead.

It is also understandable that at the start of his relationship, when he had only been dating Phoebe for a few months, to not admit to the romance. And some netizens were cruel to criticize how “pork chop” Phoebe had looked at the time, since the photo was taken in an unflattering angle and made her look chubby. Through his interviews later, it is clear that Ruco felt guilty in having Phoebe face all this pressure. Thus he wanted to give her a memorable wedding, took lots of pretty photos, and shared them with the world.

Phoebe is also energetic, youthful, and possesses a light sense of humor. I think she’s a refreshing compliment to Ruco, who tends to take things too seriously. What others may see as “obedience”, I see it as respect she has for Ruco. And he has the same for her, allowing her to continue with her acting career after marriage if that’s what makes her happy. The pregnancy just accelerated their wedding sooner.

      16. @jayne agreed! personally if ruco did do this for money, good on him! Hello he has a baby on the way, he needs the dough now more than ever. I’m not a fan of Ruco’s but I don’t see the harm in publicizing his wedding.

      17. @coralie It won’t be backlash if: he didn’t say he wants low profile for his wed. If his fans didn’t praise him godlike for getting married Phoebe, the poor Phoebe who has been called a STYLIST by her lover. If his fans particularly potatochip didn’t amused the whole word with her comment “If he wanted to use his wedding for his career, he wouldn’t have had it on a yacht to avoid paparazzi.”

      18. @prave Dude. You give me too much credit, glad to know I amused the whole world.

BTW, I must be a bad fan because I don’t follow everything he says. I didn’t know he said “low profile” but thank you for letting me know. Low profile can mean different things to different people. It’s a relative term. Was his the biggest, most expensive wedding of the year? Did they each have a zillion best men and bridesmaids? Nope. In that sense, it was low profile to him.

To them, it was an intimate affair because it was them, their closest friends and family in contained areas. He’s a celebrity, he gives interviews and there is interest in seeing his wedding broadcasted. If you are not a fan, just moved on to the next item that interests you. No need to hate on a couple during their happiest event.

      19. @jayne Thank you for expressing my thoughts. He is in a no win situation. Their wedding was so lovely and touching but those with preconceived negativity will see what they want to see.

      20. @jayne FYI, he replied the interviews for his after wed party that he INVITED TVB ARTISTS TO HIS WEDDING. Additionally, he opened the party in Myolie’s bar for the TVB artists to attend it easily after the Lighting Show. As a result, I came to a conclusion that he didn’t just invite the ATV artists but only few ATV artists came. Virgina Lok was invited to all parties, she is still a TVB manager.

In another note, never any TVB or Hong Kong artistes have a wed on yatch, a normal wed then an after wed party. How many wed he wanted to sell?

And, he said himself that he sold the wed to Big Big Channel.

      21. @jimmyszeto @passingby @prave First and foremost, the wedding was a celebration about them. He would be foolish not to allow press on it because, as Jayne noted, he would be called sour faced. I find all the bashing of Phoebe quite hurtful. “Nobody” “Porkchop” “Obedient” (What? Is she a lap dog?) She is her own person, with her own strengths and her own goals which Ruco consistently praises and acknowledges that he supports her decisions. The wedding allowed the public to get to know her, see her joy and her personality. He treats her as an equal partner.

Granted I don’t know the inner workings, but when TVB puts someone on cold storage do they announce it? I said that because he hasn’t filmed a series in almost 2 years. Rumor was he was replaced in Big White Duel. He may not have any series shown in 2019. He asked for a break but it is hard to imagine him wanting one that long. I mean if that is not being underutilized then I am sure you would be ok with the same treatment for your favorite.

And we are going to disagree about acting improvement. He started off at a much higher level but from The Other Truth to Captain of Destiny/4 Walls/Succession War there has been more variety in his emotional, humorous, angry, etc scenes. Each storyline has its weak areas, but he does try his best. He is known to be always working long, grueling hours. There is always room for improvement which he seems to welcome, but he is already among the top 4-5 current and recent past TVB actors.

      22. @potatochip As I mentioned to you before, my main issue with him is his hypocrisy, although it was a shrewd move to generate free publicity for him and his wife. As for his other good traits that you mentioned, they are separate from his hypocrisy so I won’t argue on that. Someone can be a hypocrite to others but at the same time is a filial son and faithful husband. Of cos it’s his wedding and he can choose to share or not to share. Most top artistes not in desperate need for publicity will choose to keep it private, even going to such lengths as having the wedding overseas or turning away the camera crews sent to gatecrash the wedding.
WRT his long break, how do you know that he did not ask for it? Didn’t he say he was burned out, needed time to recharge and engage in personal matters and also his mother’s poor health kept him busy caring for her? As for working unearthly hours, who in TVB doesn’t? Don’t make it sound like he’s the only one making big sacrifices.

      23. @passingby I didn’t think it was hypocritical to share his wedding. Why does he have to hide his wedding? Whether he needs the publicity or not, it is not wrong and he has not done something new that other celebrities have not done in the past.

Ever since he started dating Phoebe, people have been calling her “porkchop” and insinuating that she is a brainless, obedient nobody. If I were to judge you on the terrible things you say about strangers and call you a bully based on a few sound bites, I don’t think that is fair.

He asked for a long break, but it couldn’t have been that long. I am not making it sound like he is making big sacrifices, I am arguing against @jimmyszeto‘s comment that he is lazy. He wasn’t at the TVB anniversary show, things are not all roses with that relationship. And since his career is likely not as secured as he like, it is not a bad idea to accept publicity for his happy event. Again, the main point of the wedding was to celebrate their marriage, but a fringe positive was that he was able to share it with his fans.

      24. @potatochip You are twisting my words. I did not say it was hypocritical to share his wedding. I said it was his wedding so it was his choice to share or not. I said he was a hypocrite for saying he wanted to keep his personal life and wedding low profile but went the polar opposite when he actually got married in order to capitalise on the publicity. If he had been consistent in his actions such as saying I will be happy to share my happy occasion with everyone when the day comes, no one can fault him for practically turning his wedding into a media circus. Instead he pretended all along that he wanted to keep everything low profile in order to protect his family and gf. Fans continue to whitewash him and his actions, trying to convince naysayers that his actions have always been noble (see jimmyszeto’ s other post) but those who are not blinded by their love for him are able to see that his actions have always been calculated moves to portray himself as a good guy and protective bf. His initial denial of his relationship he claimed was to protect his gf but of cos he won’t mention that it’s also because he was afraid to lose fans. He was insistent there was nothing betw them and even resorted to telling ridiculous lies. He really should take a leaf out of Kevin Cheng’s books. That guy walks his talk. From day 1 when he dated Grace he was adamant that he wanted to keep it private and low profile He didn’t announce his wedding with a loudhailer, unlike someone else. Silly tvb sent a big big channel crew to Bali to gatecrash his party. He didn’t cave in, he showed them the door. Why? Unlike Ruco he’s a big enough star to not need to use his wedding to promote himself. Bottom line is that Ruco is a shrewd guy who knows how to sway with the wind. His actions are not always as noble as fans like to think.

      25. @potatochip Not sure if there’s anything sinister behind his long break. I don’t think so because although he wasn’t filming any drama this year, he was on tv in a few shows (Cooking Beauties, the other 2 I can’t remember the titles but one was a travel show and the other was a foodie show). Also I believe tvb schedules its artistes way ahead of time so if Ruco didn’t give a definite date when he would be ending his break, it’s logical he would be excluded from whatever jobs are available. Time and tide waits for no man so tvb moved on without him. Can’t blame them.

      26. @potatochip In Succession War Ruco was blunt by Shaun. In The Unholy Alliance he is shone by Joel Chan. Even in his wining 4 Walls, more people preferred Benjamin and Philip than him and his victory was criticized crazily in Hong Kong. As a result, he is surpassed by the younger, better and providing TVB more value such as Vincent Wong while comparing to veterans like Joel Chan, he is mediocre at best. TVB has a good reason to give up on him because he can’t provide them the money. TVB is facing serious competition coming from Mainland, China. Mainland, China is holding a bunch of young, beautiful, highly demand men in our hands. Therefore TVB must change their blood to the youngster. Ruco can’t meet the requirements, he is out because of himself. It is his fault, can’t blame TVB in any case.

What did he say to make the Hong Kong netizens starting to hate him? He said that he thinks all the actresses acted with him want to use him to climb higher. Seriously, he think he is that famous. That topic can be found in On.CC. The comments questioned him about his relationship with Nancy. Didn’t him use Nancy in a blurry relationship to attach more fans? Only stopped until he was caught with Phoebe. That time, he coverred his face in stead of protecting his lover. Before that, what did he say? “Phoebe is merely a STYLIST.” What? It really insulted Phoebe but Phoebe had to keep silent.

“He is known to be always working long, grueling hours.” I would love to see you list any TVB artistes who is NOT treated the same.

“There is always room for improvement which he seems to welcome, but he is already among the top 4-5 current and recent past TVB actors.” to you. To me he is mediocre at best. Before plastic surgery, he was better. The plastic surgery or the filler or whatever he did to his face to make his face frozen like Ken the Barbie, drove his acting out of the road.

      27. @prave For someone who hates him, you really follow everything he says much better than me. I mentioned the hours because @jimmyszeto called him lazy. All TVB artists work hard, but before the break, he was known for always working. Downplaying a new relationship is a tale as old as time.

I like Joel Chan a lot. He is charismatic, funny and plays cool, confident characters well. But he has his weak areas and is not as good as an actor as Ruco. Of course, you will argue, but that is a difference of opinion. BTW, he is 1 year older than Ruco, so by your argument, if TVB wanted to go younger, that is a shame because he also deserves to be showcased more.

And let’s not pretend Benjamin and Phillip were better regarded than Ruco in 4 Walls. Benjamin’s character may have been more likable because he wasn’t an annoying novice, but his acting was stiff and his fighting skills were weak and not believable. Phillip is a beautiful fighter, his character was fun, but his acting is very limited.

Hey, at the end of the day, I like Ruco because of his acting. I am wasting my time defending his personal life because I don’t think it is fair to bash a marriage and say it was some trade for Best Actor award.

Don’t just follow Jayne’s opinion and repeat it. No one gave any criticism to Kevin and Grace for following their usual behaviour by having a low profile wedding although Grace is usually much more disliked than any other TVB stars. People respect it when their actions consistent with their usual beliefs and behaviour.Ruco however in picking and choosing how to behave to gain the maximum advantage of the situation. It’s never his fault…
Nancy situation-did not clarify and led reporters on but that was the reporters fabrications
Ruco/Mother trash rented house incident then moves out in the night before contract was over and owing landlord rent- the house was already trashed when he moved in so it was landlords fault.
Wearing Heshen costume whilst holding photos to explaining to press landlord incident- He isn’t unprofessional. Just clarifying incident to protect himself and family.Very filial
Moody to the press over asking about his girlfriend-he is just traditional and a great man for being protective of his girlfriend
Announces wedding on Big Big Channel and sells coverage to them for exposure when they aren’t a celebrity power couple- no explanation from Ruco this time because what he has earned plenty and gained publicity from it but fans feel he’s doing it ‘to give Phoebe a great wedding’ and it is savvy behaviour that ‘he should to using his wedding for publicity because he is frozen by TVB’

      29. @jimmyszeto I have been debating with you for days so please don’t insinuate that I am some thoughtless parrot by agreeing with Jayne’s recent statement.

There was plenty of negativity for Kevin and Grace’s wedding. People were like, “Oh congrats! Now stay off my screen.”. And giving backhanded compliments like, “Surprised they kept it so quiet, she is usually a motor mouth.” “They must have gotten married because she was pregnant”. Why couldn’t people simply say “Congrats!”?

You say his fans excuse his every actions, but I say people who dislike him will find negativity in all his actions, including a wedding. You are already geared up to bash their baby by saying he is going to use it for more publicity. Sheesh.

I don’t mind listing the points so that readers can decide whether to question the inconsistency of Ruco’s behaviour, I’m sure people can decide for themselves. Although Kevin is rumoured to have a fiery temper behind the scenes, he seems much more genuinely protective of his family. I have nothing against Phoebe because I’m not a fangirl who has turned against Ruco. Phoebe is pretty and seems understanding wife material.

  7. Rooting for Vincent definitely! What has Ruco done this year to even deserve a mention? His role in SW is nothing to shout about.
@passingby – agree with your comments about his wedding. So much for being low profile – he practically blasted the media with coverage of his wedding to a point that it was just too much! They made it seem as though it is the wedding of the year when bigger celebrities have gotten married and given just enough coverage.
As for timing, don’t think he has much choice since she was already pregnant. Ruco can give all the justifications he wants but the fact remains that she was pregnant before the wedding! Again so much for being traditional!!! He has used the publicity of the wedding to boost his and his wife’s popularity especially the latter who has done nothing much except clap on Cooking Beauty, to deserve such attention.
If he wins the award this year, then the rumours about the extensive coverage of his wedding in exchange for an award may just be true because he doesn’t deserve it this round and his popularity has taken such a slide – almost forgotten until his wedding!

It was a wedding of an average Hong Kong actor that no one outside of TVB and ATV recognises and one of 30 nobodies who clapped during breaks of ‘Cooking Beauties’. Then Ruco tries to turn it into ‘celebrity wedding of the century’. He’s traditional when it favours himself and then not so traditional when there are gains to be made…

      1. @jimmyszeto ‘celebrity wedding of the century’ is impossible. They are nowhere reached to the fame of Tang Yan and LoXin. Even the wed of Christine Kuo or Kevin Cheng can surpass them easily regardless they kept it low profile. Ruco Chan is not that famous even in Hong Kong.

  8. Should give it to Matt Yeung or Ben Wong. Two of the most hard working actors who let their acting do all the talking and have the least hidden motives.

    1. @jimmyszeto I agree. They should be given a chance if they are in the line-up. You are right – they are hardworking, good in their work and don’t go for publicity stunts with hidden motives.

These types don’t get the big awards though. They are quiet, happy to just act and sign long contracts . TVB will rather promote the ones who want to fight for awards and can potentially leave…
