Zheng Shuang Scared of Criticism: “I’m Not as Strong as I Seem”
Known for her straightforward, bold, and genuine attitude, Zheng Shuang’s (郑爽) popularity isn’t without reason. After shooting to fame nine years ago thanks to Meteor Shower <一起来看流星雨>, Zheng Shuang was blessed to have a comfortable acting career with strong fan support. Even her most recent drama—Hi, I’m Saori <我的保姆手册>—is breaking the charts, and after nine years in the business, it seems like Zheng Shuang’s popularity is here to stay.
But there is a cost to everything. Being perpetually on the spotlight has finally taken a toll on Zheng Shuang. She’s actually not as strong as she appears on the outside, and the 27-year-old said it’s about time she takes a break to reflect on her own career and life.
“I will probably lessen my workload and performances from now on,” she said in an interview. “I love performing, but sometimes when I see the camera, I still get shy. I’m scared of the criticism.”
Zheng Shuang comes off as a strong woman who tells things as it is, who would always make her voice heard whenever she sees something off, but when it comes to receiving her own criticism, it would take Zheng Shuang a great amount of effort and energy to get over it.
“My reasons for wanting to perform was very simple at first,” she said.” I just wanted to make people happy, but when I get criticism and comments about my own performance, I can’t help but to feel hurt. It’s actually good to have comments like those, but maybe it’s because I’m still not mentally prepared for them. I still see and read things with the mindset of a little girl.”
Many netizens and fans are surprisingly accepting about Zheng Shuang’s honest acknowledgement, and said they would support her if she ever decides to take a hiatus. “We’ll wait for you to return,” they said.
