Hacken Lee Itching for An Acting Comeback After Performing “Integrity” Theme Song
2019’s Lunar New Year lineup will be presented with several big cinematic productions, including EEG’s Integrity <廉政風雲 煙幕> directed by Alan Mak (麥兆輝) and produced by Felix Chong (莊文強). The award-winning filmmaking duo brought together some of Hong Kong’s biggest actors to star in the crime thriller, including Sean Lau (劉青雲), Nick Cheung (張家輝), Karena Lam (林嘉欣), Anita Yuen (袁詠儀), and Alex Fong Chung-shun (方中信). The film will have a wide release across Greater China next month on Chinese New Year.
Seasoned performer and recording artist Hacken Lee (李克勤) lent his voice to sing Integrity’s theme song, “Buried Alive” <活埋>. Although already considered a legend, Hacken said “Buried Alive” was a stressful project, as he carried huge responsibility for the song. “When I recorded songs in the past, as long as I am satisfied with them, my producer will approve it. This time, the song is for a Lunar New Year film, and of course, if I am needed, I will help out in the promos. But I am not my only critic anymore. The director and the producer have to approve it as well. Thankfully, they were not in the studio with me, or I would be in much more stress!”
“Buried Alive” is a fast rock ballad with lyrics that reflect the emotional turmoil of the characters. “I really liked the atmosphere and tension Director Mak created [for the film], and when I was recording the song, I tried to imagine the three main characters on screen, using the music and my voice to describe them.”
Satisfied with the song, Hacken said it inspired him to return to acting.
“Acting and singing isn’t something that would happen if I just wish for it. I do look forward to acting again, and to work with Director Mak. I can play a tree or just a background actor. But his films are usually about cops or CIDs. I wonder if I can get him to have me play a triad member?”
Hacken shared that he would also like to try out playing villain characters, but is concerned that he won’t be convincing enough in the role. “That’s why, I prefer ‘key’ characters. ‘Key’ characters are important for the story, but they won’t have heavy screen time. It’s great to do little but have bigger impact!”
From the 90’s to early 2000’s, Hacken occasionally starred in film and dramas, mainly for TVB. One of his most well-known performances was in 2000’s Street Fighters <廟街·媽·兄弟>, in which he starred alongside singer-actor Edmond Leung (梁漢文).
