Arnold Kwok Doesn’t Like to Be Called a “Rich 2G”

It’s been a long journey for the TVB actor. In the past three years, TVB viewers have watched 27-year-old Arnold Kwok (郭子豪) build his way up, from playing small, insignificant roles with no names, to big supporting characters. In 2018’s Threesome <三個女人一個「因」>, he was the third male lead, starring alongside Mandy Wong (黃智雯).

From Model to Actor

Arnold made his industry debut as Abercrombie & Fitch’s first Asian model back in 2012. He modeled for many popular brands thereafter, but modeling wasn’t a job he particularly enjoyed. Acting and filmmaking had always been his passion.

“I don’t really like being a model because I don’t like to be a vase,” said Arnold. “Modeling is actually pretty boring. You bring your shell to work everyday and have people dress you up, do a few poses, and your work is done. I personally prefer to have more substance.”

Arnold described him as a “rather crazy” rookie actor—in a time when he was not offered many acting roles, he started his own production house and took classes on acting, producing, directing, camerawork, and even lighting.

“I used all the money I saved to open a production house. My idea at the time was that, if I knew how to film you, then people will know how to film me.”

Arnold considers himself luckier than the peers of his generation, explaining that his fortunate experience at the production house had helped him a lot when it came to his acting career.

Arnold has wealthy parents. The media likes to dub Arnold as a rich second generation due to his father’s wealth, and Arnold said he is grateful to be raised in a supportive family. In his college years, he left Hong Kong to study mechanical engineering at the distinguished Imperial College London, one of the most expensive colleges in the United Kingdom. Under his family’s support, Arnold did not have any financial worries.

But he doesn’t want to be stuck in that bubble forever. 

“Earlier, there was an article about TVB’s rich kids. Honestly, seeing me in that list really upset me. It’s worse than reading about my own dating rumors. I’ve worked really, really hard to get here so I don’t have to rely on my parents. My father has always taught me to be independent. Of course, in the end, I still believe that who I am today is all thanks to my parents. It is because of the way how I was brought up that I know I have the ability to not rely on them.”
