Ju Jingyi Disguises Herself as a Boy in “A Class of Her Own”
Known for playing the genteel classic Chinese beauty, Ju Jingyi will take on a cross-dressing role in her new drama with Song Weilong.
Filming for period drama In A Class Of Her Own <云上学堂> kicked off recently at the Xiangshan Movie and Television City.
Twenty-four-year-old Chinese actress Ju Jingyi (鞠婧禕) plays Xue Wenxi, a girl from a poor background who cross-dresses as a boy and scribes for a living to help her family make ends meet. An unplanned business deal puts her in the path of the minister’s son Feng Chengjun (played by Song Weilong 宋威龍), and she falls into a trap by entering an academy meant for boys only. The two meet and become friends with Yu Lexuan and Lei Zexin, and the four scholars form the “Yun Shang Quartet”, going through a series of hilarious and motivational events in this youth-themed romantic drama.
A New Onscreen Image for Ju Jingyi
Known for her classic ancient Chinese beauty image in dramas such as Novoland the Castle in the Sky <九州天空城>, Detective Samoyeds <熱血長安>, Legend of Yun Xi <芸汐傳>, and most recently New Madam White Snake <新白娘子傳奇>, Ju Jingyi will be challenged to play a female-disguised-as-a-male in her new role, which requires her to switch effortlessly between a genteel lady and a handsome, scholarly male student.
Song Weilong plays a wealthy, dashing scholar who chooses not to depend on his impressive family background but serves the country with his wits and talents. There will be lots of romantic sparks between Weilong and Jingyi in their story arc at the academy.
Cast of Young, Up-and-Coming Stars
Fans can also look forward to seeing 22 year-old NEX7 boyband member Bi Wenjun (毕雯珺) and 21-year-old idol Wang Ruichang (王瑞昌) in the drama, as the two form the “Yun Shang Quartet” along with the two leads. Bi Wenjun will play Yu Le Xuan, a philandering rich man’s son who is gifted in the ways of business dealings and Wang Ruichang will star as Lei Zexin, a hot-tempered and rebellious youth who is highly skilled in martial arts.

I like Song Wei Long, but his acting falls flat a lot of time, admittedly I only saw 1 drama of his and couldn’t even finish that one as his acting fails afterward to hold my attention for the drama. For her, legend of yunxi bores me and I couldn’t even finish 2 eps, and she is like the same as song Wei long, pretty enough, though not stunning enough, and her acting is pretty stock standard for the amount of time I saw. I guess I will try this one out but I wouldn’t hold my breathe for it
The Korean version was my all time favourite, until Yoovchun scandals, I cannot watch the drama anymore.
I really am apprehensive of this casting but I will support the drama regardless.
I couldn’t finish the original drama this was based on – Sungkyunkwan Scandal. That drama’s main actress Park Min-Young was really bad at acting. She did the slow-mo deer-in-headlights look so often, I couldn’t take her seriously. And her self-righteous personality & attitude was annoying me to bits. It was a drama that was trying too hard, if that makes sense, to be serious yet romantic. I hope this adaptation would be better, but I’m not counting on it. Ju Jingyi isn’t known right now for being great at acting either.
