Carlos Chan: I have Zero Dancing & Singing Talent

Carlos shared how his lack of dancing and singing talents led his company to drop their plans for him to form a band with Kenny Kwan years ago.

Attending a jewelry publicity event in Sham Sui Po, Carlos Chan (陳家樂) picked out jewelry for his sister, who is getting married in October. Carlos shared, “Today my sister and dad are both here, because she is having her wedding banquet in October. Dad has been reminding me to get something for her, but I have not done it until recently I realized there’s only two months [to the wedding].” Carlos invited his sister to pick out her own dragon and phoenix bangles, and he would pay for them with a personal budget of $60,000 HKD.

When asked about his Emperor Entertainment Group (EEG) label mate Kenny Kwan (關智斌) who will hold his own solo concert at the Hong Kong Coliseum after his BOYZ partner Steven Cheung’s (張致恆) cheating scandal, Carlos shared his happiness for Kenny. “Really happy to see that he can fulfill his own dream. I’m elated for him. When we first entered the industry, he was my senior and gave me lots of feedback. I wish him a successful show.”

When asked if he would be singing and dancing onstage as a guest performer, Carlos responded with a laugh, “I’m not good at singing and dancing, so I won’t make a fool of myself onstage. I recall  when BOYZ had disbanded and Kenny went solo, the company had plans to form a musical duo called Sun Boy’z, so they approached me (as one of the potential candidates). But after a few dancing sessions, I realized I was really not cut out for it. The company gave up on me.”

  1. TVB will make a singer/dancer out of you sooner or later! Disregard if you can sing or dance. Lol.

    1. @jjwong LOl…true! But then again, Carlos isn’t contracted with TVB so maybe not…it’s funny that he said he dances like a crab and can’t sing worth crap so he’s glad his company didn’t push him on the singer/dancer path, haha…so honest! And how sweet is it that he’s buying his little sister’s marriage jewelry….I love how close he is to his family and how comfortable he is talking about them during interviews. He’s one of the few younger generation artists nowadays who has a combination of real talent (in acting) and good looks, not to mention a down-to-earth and honest personality. Happy to see him getting so popular now! 🙂

      1. @llwy12 Yea, he does seem like a genuinely nice guy all around. Glas that he isn’t signed with TVB. He needs to branch outside of TVB, which I think he has/is. It just seems like TVB takes credit on increasing his popularity when in reality he has it, the acting chop before them.

      2. @jjwong That’s typical TVB though…they try to claim credit for everything because they can, plus they know most audiences won’t go through the trouble of vetting their info or challenging what they say. One of the “perks” of being a free-to-air TV channel in HK is being able to saturate a majority of the population (since their channel is free after all, compared to most of the other stations in HK that require a paid subscription of some sort, which most Hong Kongers are not willing to pay for) and it definitely works to TVB’s advantage in situations like this where they are able to spin the narrative whichever way they want to. In Carlos’ case – yes, TVB did “help” him gain popularity by providing him a platform for him to showcase his talent (inviting him to film a series that they produced), but let’s be honest, it was really Carlos’ stellar performance in that series that brought him to the attention of most mainstream audiences – if his performance had sucked, no one would’ve noticed him….so yes, Carlos deserves more of the credit for his own popularity than TVB does…or perhaps to be more accurate, we should say that his management company EEG deserves more credit for his popularity than TVB does (or perhaps the other artists Carlos worked with in the past whom he was able to learn from in order to build up his skills – veterans such as Kara Hui for instance….after all, Carlos had already made a name for himself in the film industry prior to filming that one series for TVB)….either way though, TVB is at the bottom of the totem pole where credit is concerned so they need to stop acting like they are the sole reason why these artists have a career in the first place (though we all know that’s wishful thinking, since TVB thrives on this kind of stuff – it’s one of the ways they’ve been able to stay relevant for the past 50+ years)….
