Lay Zhang Cancels Hong Kong Concert Amid Escalating Protests
Due to the unrest in Hong Kong, Chinese singer Lay Zhang (張藝興) called off his “Lay Zhang Grand Line The First Concert” at the last minute. Slated to perform on August 17 at the AsiaWorld-Expo, nearby the Hong Kong International Airport, Lay’s studio announced the cancellation on Weibo Monday night. The news came after protestors stormed the Hong Kong International Airport, disrupting the daily operations of one of the busiest airports in the world.
“It is with great regret that we announce the cancellation of the Hong Kong concert,” the statement read.
Lay’s studio also mentioned that Lay has always been fond of Hong Kong and felt loved and supported by many fans in the city, so his team tried to come up with possible solutions. “But it is still impossible to absolutely guarantee the traffic conditions at that time, and the safety of fans and friends,” his studio explained.
Thus, after repeated consideration, the singer decided to cancel the concert and issue a refund. Many netizens expressed support in the decision and agree that safety is the utmost priority.
