Faye Wong Makes Angelic Comeback for “My People, My Country” Theme Song
Faye Wong (王菲) makes one grand return to the music industry.
On September 24, the Chinese pop diva dropped her new song “My Motherland and I” <我和我的祖国>, theme song for the upcoming historical drama film My People, My Country <我和我的祖国>. The film is one of three back-to-back films produced to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China. The other two are the actions film The Climbers <攀登者> and The Chinese Pilot <中国机长>. All three films will be released on September 30, 2019, in time to celebrate China’s National Day on October 1st.
My People, My Country, directed by multiple directors including Chen Kaige (陈凯歌), is anthology of short stories about different historical events that occurred during the 70 years of the People’s Republic of China, including the establishment of the People’s Republic in 1949, the handover of Hong Kong in 1997, and the Beijing Olympics in 2008.
Bringing her angelic voice back to music, Faye’s return to the industry was widely welcomed. It trended on China’s top social media sites, such as Weibo.
However, not all netizens found Faye’s voice in the song appealing. Some netizens said Faye’s voice color didn’t suit the film’s style. Many also criticized Faye’s poor enunciation. One netizen suggested the filmmakers to choose singer Han Hong (韩红) to sing the theme instead, as Han Hong has a much more powerful voice.

beautiful voice still but i notice that she has issues hitting those hit notes when she starts low. like the fact how they make songs not just about breakup.
she does sing with a small drawl. it’s a voice that’s pleasant to listen to when the song is tailored for her. her enunciation may not be perfect but at least it’s not as bad as jay chou’s.
