Sonija Kwok’s Daughter Gets Sad Whenever She Leaves for Work
Sonija Kwok (郭羨妮) has been flying back and forth from Hong Kong to China to work on the movie sequel of TVB’s A Step into the Past <尋秦記>, which stars the original cast. At a press conference for the children’s fashion week in Kwai Chung today, she expressed the struggles of working while being away from home, and that the long work hours have not only taken a toll on her health, but also her daughter’s.
“I left for China around exam season for my daughter,” said the 45-year-old mother. “I would help my daughter study through video chat. Before leaving, I would prepare a sheet of vocabulary for my daughter to study with.”
Sonija said her daughter Kylie, who is now 7 years old, would get sad whenever Sonija would leave home for work. “We both cry whenever I have to leave. Now, whenever she hears that I have work, she’ll get scared. She’s always worried about whether or not I’ll be back home to sleep.”
Sonija’s mother cared for Kylie while Sonija was working in China. “The movie was wearing me out. Right now, my focuses are to rest and spend time with my daughter.” Asking if she’ll take her daughter to vacation, she said, “No, but I’ll make it up to her. Her grades haven’t been up to par recently, and I don’t want to reward that. I’ll see if they’ll improve once I get back.”
To accommodate her family, the former Miss Hong Kong said she’ll be a little more selective with her jobs from now on. She has also moved out of her home in Tseung Kwan O to a new apartment complex in Kowloon. She explained, “When we used to live in Tseung Kwan O, my daughter would have to get up at five every morning to go to school. She would commute three hours every day. Now that we’ve moved, the commute has been reduced to 15 minutes.”
