Mandy Wong is Waiting On a Perfect Time for Marriage
Mandy Wong (黃智雯) had some genuine concerns when she first completed the table read for her new drama My Life As Loan Shark <街坊財爺>. Playing a couple for the first time with Lai Lok-yi (黎諾懿), Mandy wasn’t sure if their relationship, which develops early on in the show, would be convincing enough. But she was relieved to find out that Lok-yi was actually very good at taking care of his costars, and he helped her ease into her role quickly.
“I felt confident with him,” she said. “We constantly communicate on how we should do a scene together, and that really helped with developing that romance.”
The 36-year-old shared that she is a huge fan of Korean dramas, especially the romantic comedies. For Mandy, the best part of dating has always at the beginning, when both parties are unsure of their feelings of each other. Filming My Life As Loan Shark got Mandy to reminisce the early days of her own dating life: “I really enjoy that subtleness. It’s really sweet. I can get pretty romantic. I would make DIY gifts for my boyfriend.”
Though it has been a number of years since dating businessman Anthony Jim (詹文天), Mandy stressed that it is important for her to keep their relationship fresh with surprises. “We both work for this relationship. I’m not talking about giving each other materialistic things, but heartfelt gifts. For example, we would try to remember small details about each other, like the kind of things we like. Unfortunately, I’m a bit of a lousy girlfriend. When I buy gifts for him it’s never the right size. He’s never complained, but I haven’t improved either. I’m a bit absent-minded, haha!”
Mandy and Anthony trust each other and regard each other as marriage partners, but the timing still isn’t right yet. “I am ready to get married, but the timing just isn’t right yet. We don’t know when would be the right time, but both of us have reached a consensus, and we share the same mindset.”
Is it because Mandy still hasn’t achieved her goal of winning TV Queen? She said, “That’s not what I think about. When I receive a role, my goal is to find ways on how to make her more colorful, more layered. I want to reach a different level.”
Mandy recently returned from a three-week acting course in France. She shared, “I went on a whim. I treated myself as a blank piece of paper. I experienced a lot, and I’m still trying to digest it all. I hope to be able to use what I’ve learned in my work.”

I am not sure there’s a “perfect” time to get married. I am not even sure there’s a “right” time, but there’s definitely a wrong time. Wrong time examples include right after breaking up with somebody else and shortly after meeting someone new and those are not mutually exclusive. Also, you probably shouldn’t get married if you don’t have a stable job yet. Not a fancy job or anything like that. By the sounds of it, Mandy has had time to get to know her partner and has a stable job, so probably she’s just really comfortable with status quo. It’s only a red flag if you dated for over 2 years and you are already past your 30s and you have no consensus.
It’s could be a disaster waiting to happen if not married after many years of being together. There is a higher chance than at least 1 of the 2 will move on elsewhere once the relationship loses its freshness…
