Annie Yi Strips For PETA Ad: “I’ll Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur!”
Taiwanese actress, Annie Yi (伊能静), shot a set of nude photos in an anti-fur ad for animal rights organization, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) Asia. In the photos, Annie was completely nude and used her arms to cover her bare breasts, making an emphatic statement, “I’ll rather go naked than wear fur!”
On March 8th, 44-year-old Annie Yi appeared at a PETA Asia press conference in Beijing, urging that all forms of life should be cherished and not sacrificed in the name of fashion and beauty. Confessing of her past ignorance on the cruel and violent practices of the fur farming industry, Annie admitted that she was a former consumer of fur garments. However, her perspective changed after watching a video depicting the gruesome process of how animals were skinned for their fur.
China has become the world’s leading fur exporter, an industry that was valued at more than $15 billion worldwide. Since Chinese laws do not protect the welfare of animals in captivity, there were no penalties for Chinese fur farms practicing animal abuse. Clustered in eastern China, these fur farms were often family businesses. Subject to prolonged and intense stress, the captive animals paced nervously in their cages, panted in anxiety, and even resorted to self-mutilation and cannibalism. Each year, millions of Artic foxes, raccoon dogs, mink and Rex rabbits were killed at these fur farms. Videotapes have emerged where the animals were thrown to the ground, kicked at, and subject to other physical violence in an attempt to stun them. While such violence immobilized the animals, they often remained alive when they were skinned for their furs, experiencing an unimaginable level of mental and physical pain.
Stripping naked in PETA Asia’s anti-fur campaign, Annie Yi hoped to enhance people’s awareness of unnecessary animal suffering. On her Weibo blog, Annie wrote, “If people considered their bodies to be so precious, even assigning moral value to them, why do we only strive for beauty and not the needs of survival? Why do you peel the skin of other creatures?”
Annie Yi urged people to consider the origins of consumer products and the value of life that may have been sacrificed in the production process, “If your beauty originates from decorating yourself with the killings of life, then this kind of beauty will result in a stench that other people can see! As a result, I think that true beauty emanates first from the heart.”
This was not the first time that Annie Yi has stripped naked before the camera. The former teen idol also bared it all for a breast cancer awareness campaign in 2006. Unafraid of her recent PETA Asia ad sparking controversy, Annie urged more people, including celebrities, to not support the fur farming industry, while advocating for the ethical treatment of animals.

Jayne: I hope this article raised your awareness regarding the cruelty behind the the fur farming industry. While the practices of Chinese fur farms were specifically mentioned in the article, the practice of killing animals for fashion remains cruel and unecessary.
First I don’t know her. Second, this is Peta’s usual ad strategy and I find it boring. Can we have less nudity and more on point? Because her hair in on her head, shave that off and that is more appropriate. Never liked PETA’s messages. I mean I agree on the whole no fur coat thing, but I don’t see how naked celebrities relate directly to the real message except for shock value and that is not shocking anymore.
And I have seen one video where one poor animal was stripped off its fur to make ugg boots and it was alive and I have never ever felt so much pain before. Yes it is a chinese farm. But demands fuel supply. What do these people care when they can earn a living feeding their young?
She is mostly in CHina and Taiwanese series so if you don’t watch those then you will not know her.
PETA has always been extremist. I dislike fur as well but their overzealous methods often have the opposite effect and ends up offending people instead of making them sympathetic to their cause.
Why covers the best parts and does not display another best part. If naked, then do full nudity!!!!

It is great that Annie is doing this for a good cause. I hope that people will stop wearing fur and will think about what those poor animals go through and how they suffer. I personally never liked wearing fur at all and at most I would wear faux fur if I had to, but never real fur. I would feel so uncomfortable.
It seems like in China they don’t even care for the people, but for the animals?? No way! They just care about making money and profits at the expense of others’ lives whether it be people, animals or any living thing…

I’m against fur farming too. It’s heart-wrenching to see the conditions of the animals. Will they die of cold or unhealed wounds? Who will the cruel farmer let the animals regrow the skin and fur before skinning them again? very heartless. People should not wear real fur now after we have synthetic fur.

alot of things also make animals suffer: the oil spill, plastic and garbage thrown into the water, birds swallowing small plastic thinking that it is food. Synthetic fur is usually non biodegradable. The factories that makes our ipods, cell phones, etc.. we wipe out habitats, environments to build these factories… if there was no fur, are they really suffering less?
Anyone remember “I am Legend”.. foliage and deers could be seen when the human population was wiped out.

The things you mention about use and disposal of plastics, consumption of non-biodegradable products, fall under environmental responsibility. This is another issue which is of great importance, not only for animals, but for humans and all life forms.
Skinning an animal for fur garments would not fall under environmental responsibility but rather animal welfare. The means under which the animals are killed causes them considerable suffering. It is equivalent to torture tactics that prisoners are subjected to before their final death. I was reading about death by 1,000 cuts (a form of capital punishment in which a prisoner is slowly sliced in the flesh, decapitated, and suffers great pain before its death). This is an extreme example, but the manner of death may mean significantly more suffering.
At the same time, the anti-fur movement also urges consumers to not wear fur, a fashion trend which is not a necessity.
Between the synthetic materials that are available these days, such as fake leather versus real leather, manufacturers are now coming up with biodegradable faux leather and more environmentally friendly materials.
So if the consumer finds it to be an important issue, we can make informed choices and change our lifestyle habits in some ways.
Why ppl always have to go naked when they are talking about the fur? Normal clothes can’t help? It can be creative at first but too many nude for no fur! The artists should re-think of nude again because if the nude isn’t well done, it can be very disgusting and ppl will focus on the nude more than the message about fur.
Wearing animal fur is kInda barbaric. We have coat that can keep us warm i dont understand why ppl wear fur, is it social status?beauty? .
I stop taking my kids to go to circus after i saw a very depressing and hungry tigers on rhe show. One tiger poops during the show and another tiger fight over the poops to eat. That kinda make me wOndering… I am not animal activist or anything but i feel that if i can contribute even for 0.000001 percent, at least i do my part …
China’s laws on animal is just too ugly & disgusting. I hope wwf or any powerful society will take action on these greedy business and release those poor animals. The video is indeed disturbing but can imagine we can disgusted watching the video and what about those poor animals who r kept in the cage waiting to be skinned alive? Honesty, this action can happen in every countries. Have you ever seen the clips of small dogs and cats are tortured to death in Europe and US? Some ppl are sick, dun generalise.

Most of ppl don’t kill natural animals to eat. I say most because there are some natural animals who are killing for meat by most of countries in the world.
