Kris Wu and Andy Yang in a New Drama?
Drama adaptions of popular novels are common in the Chinese television industry because it guarantees there is already a fan base. Although it easily generates interest, casting choices of these beloved characters may generate controversy. With the upcoming drama adaptation of historical fiction novel A Story of Hairpin <簪中录>, fans are not happy with the rumored casting of Kris Wu (吴亦凡) and Andy Yang (also known as Yang Zi 杨紫). Filming is expected to begin in November.
Though the cast has not been officially announced yet, many fans are already reacting strongly to Kris and Andy allegedly taking the lead roles. In online discussions, Kris and Andy’s fans are fighting in terms of their idol’s position in billing. It is apparently reported that Kris is in first position and is paid more, while Andy follows in second billing.
In support of Kris, some fans have taken to rant on the casting of Andy and criticized her looks, works and advertisements. This angered Andy’s fans who then questioned why her position is under Kris when she has lengthy acting experience and is known for her success in recent dramas such as Ashes in Love < 香蜜沉沉烬如霜> and Go Go Squid <亲爱的,热爱的> that propelled both respective male leads Deng Lun (邓伦) and Li Xian (李现) to stardom.
Many netizens are also doubting Kris’s suitability and capability in playing the character Li Shu Bai with his lack of acting experience. He has also not filmed any dramas before, and his movies have received only lackluster results. As such, his casting had sent many of the novel’s fans worrying if he could pull off portraying the character suitably.
