Francis Ng Shares Parenting Style on Flora Chan’s Educational Show

As the producer and host of her educational-themed show, After School <放學後>, Flora Chan (陳慧珊) has invited many of her friends from the entertainment industry to take part in sharing about their educational upbringing. The previous episodes starred Myolie Wu (胡杏兒), Jessica Hsuan (宣萱), and Michael Wong (王敏德), to name a few. Most recently, and to the pleasant surprise of fans, Flora invited Francis Ng (吳鎮宇) to star in an episode. This marks the duo’s first reunion since the successful Triumph in the Skies <衝上雲霄> 16 years ago.

While showing Flora around the Wong Tai Sin area where he grew up, Francis reminisced about his mother, who worked hard to put food on the table and raise him. He learned to persevere and never give up by witnessing his mother’s tireless efforts. He recalled, “When I was younger, my mother would yell at me. While she was yelling at me, she would cry even harder than me. I thought, what kind of woman is dumb like my mother? But a mother’s love is not measured by how much material things she gives you. She hit and yelled at me because I did something wrong. My mom is hurting even more than me, which is why she cried.”

Growing up in the 1960s was difficult. From his mother, Francis learned many life principles that he still embodies today. “She told me to never bully anyone, but also to never let anyone bully me. That is the principle of being a person.”

As a father himself, Francis hopes to impart these principles to his 11-year-old son, Feynman Ng. He recalled, “One day, I noticed that the side of my son’s face was bruised. I was actually a bit happy and asked whether it was because he had gotten into a fight or because he got beaten up. I was a bit happy because I feel that everyone learns through mistakes and experiences.”

Francis divulged that a fellow classmate was harassing his 14-year-old son. When Feynman retaliated, his classmate punched him in the face. Francis continued, “I told my son that from this experience, he will now know how to protect his face when something like this happens again. My wife, though, told my son he should have ran away. However, I feel that at school, these people are schoolmates you will see every day. You have to face the problem head on. These types of harassment and bullying issues are bound to happen. At his age, he needs to learn how to protect himself.”
