After Tax Scandal, Fan Bingbing Turns to Social Selling
Since her tax fraud scandal, Fan Bingbing‘s (范冰冰) reputation and earnings have taken a big dent. Despite losing endorsements from major brands, the 38-year-old actress leveraged her position as a fashion icon to successfully sell beauty products through social media. In four minutes, Fan Bingbing made 20 million yuan.
In 2018, Fan Bingbing admitted to tax evasion and had to pay back 883 million yuan in taxes and fines. It was speculated that without the tax investigation, she would have wed fiance Li Chen (李晨). But the couple eventually split last year, choosing to announce their breakup months later after the storm settled post Bingbing’s scandal.
Known as a fashion and beauty icon, Bingbing saw an opportunity to start selling her own brand of face masks through the use of social media and e-commerce platform, Xiaohongshu, also known as Red. Even prior to selling face masks, Bingbing was an active user on this social media platform, often recommending beauty products or promoting brands. Partnering up with a well-known social media personality and opening up a live stream to demonstrate her products, Bingbing pocketed 20 million RMB in just under four short minutes.
Artistes Turn to Social Selling
Not only is Bingbing finding success in social selling, but many Chinese artistes have also been turning to e-commerce. Even Vicki Zhao (趙薇), Kris Wu (吳亦凡), Zheng Shuang (鄭爽), and soccer player David Beckham have been eager for business opportunities on social media.
Another prime example is Bingbing’s co-star from Empress of China <武則天>, Zhang Ting (張庭). She and her husband, Kevin Lin (林瑞陽), both took advantage of social media and began selling their own brand of beauty products in recent years. With their net worth currently at 32.8 billion yuan, Kevin urged Zhang Ting to retire from acting and promised to pay her a monthly salary of 200 million yuan every month instead.

Fan Bingbing Admits Tax Evasion Tactics: “I’m Deeply Ashamed”
I always think she’s wearing too much heavy makeup because how light her face is?
@cutie777
i think she’s naturally very pale. some northern chinese people are whiter than white people. that’s where the expression translucent red on white comes from to describe a person w/ fair skin. she’s very fortunate to have that. you look at some girls from the north, you will notice the same.
@m0m0
Being naturally pale is one thing but not like that. I am naturally pale too and never wear make up but I am not that pale. She is now unnaturally pale that I think she may have bleached her skin not just put on make up.
@cutie777
Nah.. my ex was from Beijing and she was extremely pale. I don’t think anyone will purposely put on makeup to make themselves look pale white….
@jimmyszeto The whole asian markets skin products is marketed towards getting a whiter face, I wouldnt be surprised if she has tried to bleach it. Its just one of Chinas misconceptions about what makes you beautiful. Being skinny is another. Her face wasnt that pale in Princess Pearl.
@megamiaow
I agree and I saw some women who tried to bleach their skin to the point of permanently damaging it. There was this woman who did that on the show the Price of Beauty. Her skin was permanently damaged to the point that she could not go into the sun without her skin burning. Her husband even left her because of it. It was very tragic. People even get dangerous injections to get lighter skin which is bad for your health. I would not be shocked if Fan Bing Bing did those things. She looks sickly pale now that it no longer looks natural. Yes she was not that pale in a Princess Pearl.
@jimmyszeto
Not really as I am naturally pale but not that pale. Many do put on make up look more pale sadly. Being pale is one thing but not that pale as it is not natural.
@cutie777
I think it is not just make up but she could have bleached her skin too. I have seen documentaries where people actually get injections just to get lighter skin. Those injections are very bad for your health but just to get lighter skin, they were willing to do anything. I find that sad as health should be number one not looks. What is the point of looking good if you do not even feel good?
@hetieshou I know what you mean. Michael Jackson is one good sample and I remember Raymond Lam when he first join tvb his skin looks very dark then he suddenly got some pale.
@cutie777
Glad at least you know what I am referring to. My late parents like lighter skin too but naturally light as my mom refers to as “rosy pale/light”, not abnormally pale like a ghost. Yes pale like Micheal Jackson as you mentioned is not natural, normal or healthy.
it’s time to switch from acting to something else anyway although it was it was an abrupt halt for her. many artists do eventually phase out. not neccessarily a bad thing looking back in retrospect for her. at least she’s still make good money and wealthy.
@m0m0
I agree and not everyone can be a celebrity for life and you have a phase but once it is over, many switch to business or another profession. She is still lucky to still be able to live the high life even after the tax evasion scandal.
Actually, I think alot of Korean girls like to have makeup that’s pale? haha lol….Just like how some of them love the Taylor Swift red lipstick? haha lol…. Didn’t china or HK love calling guys ‘ TALL, RICH & HANDSOME? Females – they call it WHITE, RICH & PRETTY? hahaa lol….I always thought that’s the reason some women love the pale skin makeup. haha lol….
@wm2017
Yeah, I just saw a girl with super heavy make up at a Korean market the other days. Some korean girls like to wear super thick heavy make up. Seems to be a trend that started two decades ago.
@m0m0
Not just Korean but Chinese too. I saw this spray thing on the make up videos and once they spray it on, their skin is very light and pale. Many were asking what kind of make up it is.
@hetieshou skin whitening is also a routine of many south asian women who buy into the myth that white equals beauty. Recently a woman in the states was poisoned by skin whitener purchased from mexico that contained mercury.
@msxie0714
I know what you mean and South Asians are also obsessed with lighter skin. Yes, I heard about this bad chemical infested skin whitening products. I find it sad how people are willing to risk their health just for lighter skin. Is it worth it?
