After a Decade of Making Music, G.E.M. Learns What to Cherish the Most
When G.E.M. (鄧紫棋) debuted in the music industry in 2008, she was only 17 years old. Music was the reason why she started her career at such a young age, and music continues to be the reason why she is still going strong today.
And after going from a rookie to a senior professional, G.E.M. finds that her initial heart has never changed.
“That same mindset still resonates with me,” said the 28-year-old, speaking with Marie Claire. “Even after overcoming different environments, stresses, and challenges, as long as I continue with that mindset of ‘not caring what you think’, I’ll be able to find motivation to make music. It comes naturally.”
G.E.M. has definitely grown, but what she finds that has changed the most was her confidence. “I remember I used to always care about what people think of me. When others don’t understand me, I’d feel misunderstood and wronged, and I’ll let out my feelings in my music. Now, I find that there’s no reason for others to understand me. I can even go as far as saying that I don’t have that desire at all anymore. Even if I was misunderstood, I don’t find the need to clarify. If you really want to know what I think, then listen to my music.”
G.E.M. continues to make music that is empowering for women, and it is through her experiences as a woman that G.E.M. has learned what it means to be strong. “Our society puts a lot of pressure on women, and I am definitely feeling it. I wanted to find a way out, and I also want to help other women find a way to feel free and comfortable. I’ve discovered that regardless if you’re a man or a woman, you’re taught how to be strong. After so many years, I’ve come to understand that being strong isn’t about being able to dodge bullets for 365 days. Being strong means you’re able to face your weaknesses. You are willing to share vulnerabilities with others. That is true strength.”
Through her growth, G.E.M. has learned what she needs to cherish the most in her life. “A friend is someone who you can share your feelings with. There are many different kinds of friends, but those who accept you for you are the true friends. I’ve come across many different kinds of people over the years, and it’s made me realize that the world is very cruel and cold. But despite the darkness, there are many positives. It’s gotten me to see who truly loves me, and it’s led me to discover what I should cherish. No matter how successful you are, how many goals you’ve achieved, all of that would eventually be in the past. Only the influences from the people beside you will stay with you forever, even after you die.”
