13 Miss Hong Kong Winners Who Come From Wealthy Families

Due to the coronavirus outbreak, the 2020 Miss Hong Kong Pageant has been canceled. The beauty queen contest, which was first held in 1973, used to be Hong Kong’s most publicized events, and winners of the contest—as well as a few lucky contestants—all end up being famous actresses, singers, or socialites in their own right.

But over the years, the pageant has attracted the attention of contestants who already came from wealthy backgrounds. Take a look at the list below:

2019 second runner-up, Kelly Gu (古佩玲)

Rumors say that Kelly’s father is both a billionaire and a government official in mainland China. Kelly herself grew up in Hong Kong and Toronto.

2017 winner, Juliette Louie (雷莊兒)

Juliette’s father is Henry Lui (雷葆文), a top fashion designer in Hong Kong. Known as “the all-rounder designer”, it is said that Lui owns multiple properties overseas, totaling over one hundred million dollars in assets.

2016 Miss Friendship, Bowie Cheung (張寶兒)

Now a TVB actress, Bowie reportedly comes from a wealthy family. Her parents own at least seven residential units in Leighton Hill. Her father is worth at least HK$300 million.

2015 runner-up, Ada Pong (龐卓欣)

Despite being one of the more popular contestants, Ada chose not to pursue a career in entertainment, and it’s not hard to understand why. Her father, Pong Po-lam (龐寶林) is a stock critic and the general manager of a financial company. Her mother is a professor at the Chinese Universit of Hong Kong. Two years ago, it was reported that Ada had purchased a home worth HK$12 million.

2014 winner, Veronica Shiu (邵珮詩)

Best known for being a former regular on Come Home Love: Lo and Behold <>, Veronica is actually the great granddaughter of Shiu Wai-ming (邵蔚明), one of the creators of Vitasoy.

2014 runner-up, Erin Wong (王卓淇)

Eric’s father owns a skincare manufacturing company, and operates a 500,000 square feet warehouse in Shenzhen. At only 24 years old, Erin already became the owner of a HK$6 million home in the Baiyun District of Guangzhou.

2013 winner, Grace Chan (陳凱琳)

Grace’s father Chan Kwai-cheung (陳桂祥) is known as the “King of Shops” as he owns real estate properties worth up to HK$50 million. He has also dabbled in the gas station business. Prior to auditioning for MHK, Grace was already living in a 5,000 sq. ft. home in Kowloon Tong.

2012 second runner-up, Tracy Chu (朱千雪)

The actress-turned-lawyer also has a wealthy father. Her father owns a hardware business, and reportedly gifted Tracy with two properties when she turned 19 years old.

2010 second runner-up, Lisa Ch’ng (莊思明)

Lisa’s father is a Malaysian Datuk who leads a family business that covers jewelry, paper, and even real estate.

2008 winner, Edelweiss Cheung (張舒雅)

Shortly after winning the pageant, Edelweiss was photographed partying at clubs and neglected her duty as Miss Hong Kong, which caused her to get fired. Edelweiss’s father is the chairman of Edelweiss Jewelry.

2002 winner, Tiffany Lam (林敏俐)

Her father, Lam Kwok-gwong (林國光) is the creator of Hong Kong adult magazine, Lung Fu Pao <龍虎豹>. After fulfilling her duties as a pageant winner, she returned to San Francisco to manage her family business. Tiffany is also the older cousin of 2009 winner Sandy Lau (劉倩婷).

1998 winner, Anne Heung (向海嵐)

While Anne did end up pursuing a successful acting career post-MHK, many may have conveniently forgotten that she is actually the niece of filmmaker Charles Heung (向華強), who also has a triad background. While she was still competing, there were rumors that Charles had pulled some strings behind the scene.

1993 finalist, Kenix Kwok (郭可盈)

Kenix was one of TVB’s top leading actresses in the 90’s and early 2000’s. Her later father, Kwok Tat-cheung (郭達昌), reportedly passed down over HK$10 billion of assets to his four children when he passed.
