Ma Yili to Star Alongside Hu Ge in Wong Kar Wai’s “Blossoms”
Wong Kar Wai’s (王家衛) first film in eight years, Blossoms <繁花>, is preparing for production. Originally scheduled to begin filming earlier this year, production was withheld following the COVID-19 outbreak in China.
Starring Hu Ge (胡歌), Blossoms is based on Jin Yucheng’s (金宇澄) long novel of the same name. The story follows main character A’bao, from 10 years old to middle age. Set in Shanghai, the first part is set in the 1960s to 1970s; the second half is from 1980s to 1990s.
It was also reported that Wong will also be producing a TV adaptation of the novel, but he will not direct.
According to the latest reports, Chinese actress Ma Yili (馬伊琍) has been cast to star alongside Hu Ge as his love interest. Kris Wu (吳亦凡) will also be starring in the film.
Netizens and fans of the original novel have reservations about Ma Yili’s casting, as Yili will reportedly be playing an “unmarried young woman.” Yili is already 44 years old and is a mother of two. She is also older than Hu Ge by seven years. For an actress known for portraying strong and mature roles, having her play a young woman is uncharacteristic and unconvincing.
However, there are also netizens who have confidence in Yili’s skills, and that Blossoms may be an opportunity for Yili to tackle something more challenging and different.
