Yu Zheng’s “Love Story of Court Enemies” Literally Stole a Scene from “Ruyi’s Royal Love in the Palace”

Yu Zheng’s (于正) latest Qing Dynasty drama Love Story of Court Enemies <那江烟花那江雨> has quietly premiered in mainland China. As the majority of the cast are rookies, starring Wu Jiayi (吴佳怡) in the lead, the drama hasn’t been getting much traction on social media… until this one scene.

Episode 9 featured a scene of mourning court officials, dressed in white, bowing in front of the Palace of the Heavenly Purity to mourn the death of their emperor. The scene is almost an exact copy of a scene in Ruyi’s Royal Love in the Palace <如懿传>. The only difference between the two scenes were the wide versus closer shots.

From their outfits, to props, and to even the lighting, the scenes looked exactly the same. Netizens tagged Ruyi’s Royal Love in Palace’s producer Huang Lan (黄澜), who expressed that she had no idea about the the scenes, and even asked which episode the scene was from.

The scene angered many Ruyi fans, who requested the studio of Love Story of Court Enemies to delete the scene and issue an official apology. The scene from Love Story soon disappeared on the internet, but it took the studio a few days later, on August 13th, to issue a public apology. In their apology, they explained that their editors had accidentally added a scene from Ruyi into the show, and that the company had failed to identify the scene when reviewing the episode. They officially apologized to Ruyi, their studio, and their investors.
