Fala Chen Shares Scenes Opposite Nicole Kidman in “The Undoing”
Fala plays a parent and will appear in four out of six episodes.
Making her Hollywood debut, Fala Chen (陳法拉) is set to appear in four out of six episodes in HBO miniseries The Undoing. Directed by Susanne Bier who was behind Bird Box, the drama also stars Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant and aired its first episode on October 25.
Adapted from the novel You Should Have Known by Jean Hanff Korelitz, the story revolves around a couple played by Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant who appear to be living the perfect life until a violent death disrupts the façade. At this time, her husband goes missing–could he be responsible for the disasters shaking up their community?
Playing a parent named Jolene, Fala will have the most cameos in the first episode. The 38-year-old actress will also appear opposite Nicole Kidman in a three-minute long scene where the parents gather for tea, though Fala’s lines are limited.
Besides The Undoing, Fala is also part of the cast for Marvel mega-production Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings <尚氣> alongside Tony Leung (梁朝偉), Michelle Yeoh (楊紫瓊) and Golden Globes Best Actress Awkwafina. While it was previously rumored that Fala would be playing Leiko Wu, a key character in the film, another actress has been recently confirmed to be cast instead, leaving Fala’s role to be confirmed by the production team.

Fala Chen Cast in HBO Miniseries, “The Undoing”, with Nicole Kidman
Lol, I love how this is being blown out of proportion. She had two lines, one scene, in it she portrayed the typical trophy wife. Hong Chau has had SIZEABLE acclaimed roles in two major drama series (Watchmen & Homecoming), those are roles to wrie an article about. Fala was “vase with pretty flowers”.
@seriously I assume you watched it, so thank you for pointing this out. She was never confirmed for Shang chi so she has “made it big” in Hollywood. In contrast Selena is leading a Canadian series.

@bubbles23
No one watches Canadian TV shows. Let’s be honest here.
Fala is still ahead by being a ‘glorified extra’ in a blockbuster HBO TV show that people will watch and pay attention to than Selena being a leading actress in a low budget Canadian TV show that nobody watches.
Selena even returned to TVB cause she can’t find better opportunities in the west.
@anon you’re not wrong. Julliard grad is a huge achievement in of itself
@anon
Canadian shows are watched around the world. Kim’s Convenience (with Simu Liu who plays Shang Chi in the new Marvel movie) and Schitt’s Creek (with Eugene Levy and Katherine O’Hara) were picked up by Netflix and is very popular in Canada and the US. Both shows also have a strong cult following.
There are many other shows. They may not be mainstream on US networks, but are definitely quality shows with a large audience. Otherwise there wouldn’t have been multiple seasons and award recognition for the outstanding script and performances.
Also want to mention that Schitt’s Creek won all 7 of the Emmy awards it was nominated for this year, including best comedy series.
@seriously – Good point and thanks for bringing this up………Actually,………Still think Fala is really not Hollywood material, and is unlikely to go any further than these petite cameo roles………Her background from TVB isn’t going to do much, nor will that acting degree she got from the States…….She’s kind of already past her prime, if she ever even reached it.
Storyline is pretty interesting but fala is just a glorified extra here. A bit disappointed she is the token asian here. I noticed her accent is quite thick here. I spoke with her in person before and her accent was not that thick so not sure if she did that on purpose for the drama? She barely has any lines and when she does the rest of the cast barely responds to her. They even tuned her out when she was speaking. Maybe she might have more lines later? But as of now she just seems like an extra.
@holiday Yeah, I don’t think her English is that fluent based on past videos of her speaking it. She has this Chinglish accent to her whereas other former Miss Internationals/HKs like Linda, Leanne, Selena, and Tracy are more fluent.
But uh yeah, her role was too hyped up by the HK Media.
It’s way too soon to judge whether Fala is a ‘glorified extra’ or not. It’s only been one episode. Talk about jumping the gun.
While I agree with the sentiment that Fala’s role in this series is being blown out of proportion by the HK media, there’s no doubt that she (or her manager) made the right decision to participate in this series, especially when compared to other Chinese actresses who’ve tried to break into Hollywood. Her role in The Undoing may be minor, but the series itself is high profile (production team – specifically scriptwriter and director — are well-known), airing on a channel that is widely watched (HBO), not to mention getting the chance to work with such globally recognized, award-winning artists as Nicole Kidman and Hugh Grant. I haven’t watched the series yet (though I’m familiar with the story, since I read the book that the series was based on), but I’ve been following the news on it and in addition to the good acclaim the series has been getting, there is also already talk of it potentially being a front-runner for awards next year (which I’m not surprised about, since Nicole Kidman has been on a winning streak in terms of the projects she’s been involved with the past couple years). For Fala to be associated with this series, even in a limited capacity, is already a huge win for her, as it does raise her profile considerably regardless of how she performs in it…doesn’t matter that the role isn’t “sizable,” at least not in this case.
It’s not new for media to make a big fuss of things like that, remember how they got excited when there’s participation i Hollywood blockbusters?
