Roger Kwok and Joey Meng at “Cousin, You Are Good” Costume Fitting
TVB held the costume fitting for its new drama, Cousin, You Are Good <老表，你好嘢>, yesterday. The drama features the refreshing pairing of Roger Kwok (郭晉安) and former ATV actress, Joey Meng (萬綺雯). In addition, Wong Cho Lam (王祖藍) has been promoted to scriptwriter for the new comedy!
After successfully recruiting ATV’s former #1 Sister, Alice Chan (陳煒), TVB successfully persuaded Joey Meng to act in Cousin, You Are Good. ATV drama, My Date With a Vampire <我和殭屍有個約會>, was a cult classic and shot Joey to popularity. Although Roger Kwok will be working with Joey Meng for the first time, he indicated that he had watched her performance in My Date With a Vampire. Joey said that she watched Roger in Queens of Diamonds and Hearts <東西宮略>.
Joey complimented TVB City for its large size and amenities, likening it to an elite university campus. As a newcomer at TVB, Joey said, “Currently, I am most familiar with the security guards because I frequently ask for directions.”
Wong Cho Lam Promoted to Scriptwriter
Cousin, You Are Good will be Wong Cho Lam’s first TVB scriptwriting project. In February, it was revealed that Wong Cho Lam had approached the TVB Production Department with his idea for the story, which was partially based on his real life experience. Wong Cho Lam revealed that the new drama will draw upon the increasing migration of mainland Chinese in Hong Kong. TVB was delighted with the idea, thus allowed Wong Cho Lam the chance to demonstrate his writing skills.
By transcending his acting duties and crossing over to scriptwriting duties, Wong Cho Lam came under fire earlier. An anonymous TVB insider criticized Wong Cho Lam in lacking the proper qualifications to take on the important scriptwriting duties.
Wong Kwong Leung (黃光亮) and Wong Cho Lam will portray father and son in Cousin, You Are Good. Due to the actors’ physical resemblance to each other, fans mistook them to be truly father and son in real life. Wong Kwong Leung said, “We do not look like each other at all! I do not understand why such rumors surfaced!”
Wong Kwong Leung teased Wong Cho Lam, “Did you go through puberty yet? If you were taller, then you will look like me. Your current height is like Mimi Chu (朱咪咪)!”
Whitney Hui to Star in First TVB Role
2011 Miss Hong Kong First Runner-up, Whitney Hui (許亦妮), will appear in her first TVB drama in Cousin, You Are Good. She admitted that she was nervous about her first acting role. In the series, Whitney will be a third party in Louis Cheung (張繼聰) and Ivana Wong’s (王宛之) relationship, but was not concerned that the audience will scold her. Whitney said, “This often happens in real life.” Asked whether she had personally experienced a third party involvement in a relationship, Whitney said simply, “If you are compatible, you stay together. If you are incompatible, then you break up!”
Cousin, You Are Good is a TVB comedy produced by Wong Wai Sing (黃偉聲). The series also stars Mimi Chu, Helen Law (羅蘭) and Wu Fung (胡楓) .

I immediately thought the same thing when I first saw the photo. It’s as if TVB is just randomly picking people and casting them together in this series. I don’t find it refreshing at all except the pairing of Roger and Joey. Don’t have high expectations for this but will give it a try when it gets released just to see Roger and Joey’s chemistry.
This series need one hell of a strong script since beside Roger, the others aren’t strong materials.
Roger n Joey is really a refreshing couple, hope they have good chemistry. There is some newbie in this series which might be good thing.
Let’s hope Cho Lam proves that he is a good scriptwriter.

Joey Meng looks really thin in the photo. Hope she gains a bit more weight in the future. I saw her in ‘Fairytale Killer’ recently and she also looks very thin in the movie.
Im not sure if Joey Meng is under stressed or if she’s following the “thin” trend that TY, Kate and Sharon are following mostly.
She was usually thin except she had baby fat on her face. Sorry to say she has aged so much I almost couldn’t recognise her.
Agree with you, Fuun. Joey Meng aged a lot since the drama series “My Date With a Vampire . I watched her in a legal drama series, filmed maybe two years ago by ATV. She almost looked like an old lady. I could not recognize her until I heard her voice.

I don’t like Roger Kwok’s acting, especially in comedies. The only one I thought highly of his acting was “Last One Standing” . He did well in that drama series.
I think roger acts well in both comedy and drama. After all these yrs, he is still very attractive to me. I prefer him over Ruco anyday.

Roger Kwok still looks good and young, but his acting has never improved. I can’t stand him acting “Ah Wong” in both ancient and modern (especially modern) drama series.
With so many years of acting experience, Roger Kwok should have way better acting skills. Unfortunately, he is no good in acting, especially comedies.
In “Queens of Diamonds and Hearts”, a ancient comedy, Roger was acting like “Ah Wong” in this drama series.
Yup, I would agree that Roger Kwok’s acting has not improved, but he is definitely one of the best actors at TVB. After all, he has been giving stellar performances for years, and it’s hard to do even better. You might not like him in comedies – even though many do – but he is excellent in drama as well. Last One Standing and Wax and Wane are proof of that. A versatile actor of high calibre who proved his worth way before the likes of Ruco and LF and what-have-you.

Sometimes, comedies are harder to act in than drama b/c u have to find a balance of funny but not OTT. I think roger is very versatile and was very good as ah Wong in “square pegs”. But I didn’t perceive him as playing ah Wong again in “queen”. He was a careless and perverted king who still had a sweet side. Do u think Ruco would have done better? After TOT, FH3, and “no good”, I have yet to be impressed by him.

He is totally silly and lousy in acting comedies. He always portrayed his characters like Ah Wong. How good his his acting then?
In any comedies, Roger Kwok always speaks like Ah Wong in any type of characters.

In fact, I was surprised that Chan Chin Pang could handle Alex’s character so well in “No Good Either Way” which is a comedy. It is fun to watch him. He was serious but humourous, and his acting made us laugh.
But Sandcherry how can Roger be bland? What is bland anyway? Bored with an actor doesn’t mean he is bland though. Yes I do agree he has lazy intonations and all that which gives an impression of same sound, same thing but that is not a measure of bland.
Look at MArco Ngai, he is one actor who talks the same, walks the same, act the same in EVERY single role AND YET he is never bland, he is in fact rather exciting to watch eventhough he is the same all over.

I heard that he is rather temperamental and picky. Probably it is the reason why TVB does not cast him much in their drama series.
Roger’s expertise is in his eyes, that minute flick of his eyes that can convey so much more than big actions, sweeping actions. He is that sort of actor that TV can do justice to him, because on close up and the closer the better. The hands, the body language, he is subtle and yet he conveys much more by not doing much. That is why to me he is one of TVB’s top actors and like I said in other posts, maybe comedy is not his forte but usually he is failed by a character rather than the other way around. Maybe he has stopped improving but then he was at a very high place to begin with so the difference can’t be much to notice. He can play good guy and bad guy. He is flexible but yes, maybe comedy is something he can’t do much after all comedy is about good writing and comic timing. You’re either a terribly good actor with excellent comic timing or god awful one who can’t act so people just laugh as your wooden expressions, which Roger is admittedly neither.
What is this comparison with Ruco anyway? Why compare? Are they even similar?

You are also right in saying that comedy is not his forte. In that case, why did TVB still ask him to act comedies? I can’t stand “Ah Wong” any more (as he acted Ah Wong in all comedies).
In fact I think Roger suits the serious roles than the comedies. But because Ah Wong was a peak of his career, he gets this kind of roles onward.

U can’t really blame Vivien. I think she is too young to have watched roger’s older series like “at the threshold of an era” and “rural hero”. Younger audience only remember him in comedy series.
Yea, I have a feeling Vivien is way too young to remember or appreciate Roger and his earlier performances as well as other great things about Roger.
I have watched Roger Kwok’s performance ever since he started his career (singing and acting) with Gallen Lo. They had the same manager. Gallen Lo was very good in acting and got promoted by TVB, but Roger was no good in both singing and acting. He was only promoted when most of the good actors were gone in 2000s.
I admit that Roger Kwok is good and young looking, but I cannot agree that he is good in acting. “Last One Standing”was his only well-acted drama series.
I am not young or an idol fan. I go for artistes with really good acting, such as Sheren Tang, Louise Lee Sze Kee, Maggie Cheung, Gallen Lo, Bowie Lam, Charmaine Sheh, etc. These are what I call artistes with good acting.

sandcherry, I disagree. Gallen was rubbished as an actor when he first started, famously was called a log of wood and I agree. Only after a few years he understood acting. Roger was first heavily promoted, he was the lead actor from the start and he was good but fresh and inexperience. He left for China and then came back that was when Gallen was becoming great whilst he had to start again, I can’t remember the timeline. Last One Standing? Next to “Scream yourself hoarse” Kevin Cheng? Is it that one? ANyone would look good next to one very weak actor. If that is not the series then forgive me for not remembering.
The fact that you wrote Charmaine Sheh as one with good acting shows to me maybe you haven’t seen Roger’s performance in full. Charmaine even now is a weak actress. I like her, I do like her very much, she has improved leaps and bounds but truth be told, she was god awful when she started but she worked her way up to become decent and by decent I mean tolerable. But she is in no way in the class of actresses who are great actresses but she is memorable because she has a good viewers’ face (direct translation from Chinese) and she is likeable.
Bowie Lam to me has my vote as the sexiest actor in TVB when he was in TVB. And yes he is a fantastic actor.

However, I don’t think Roger Kwok has improved much over those 26 years. He was promoted more at the beginning because he was handsome and looked like Leslie Cheung. I have not seen much improvement from him in those 26 years. If an actor has acted for 26 years, he should have very good acting skills.
Most artistes didn’t have good acting skills when they first started, but they would improve after a few years. Not Roger Kwok though!
I have watched many of Roger’s drama series ever since he started with TVB, but I am not impressed by his acting at all.
He was so poor and did not have any work to do for a while and his ex-girlfriend (Lau Siu-Wai) dumped him. He told Chan Chi-Wan at his show.
I just don’t like Roger’s acting, but I think he has a very nice personality (a good guy, good husband and a good father).
‘At the Threshold of an Era’ (Parts 1 & 2) was amazing. Louis and Gallen delivered great performances and portrayed their characters like no other. Roger only played a supporting role and from what I remember, his character was more of an introvert and his portrayal was only quite average. Even though Roger has won Best Actor twice for playing “Ah Wong”, I still prefer his acting in “Last One Standing” as he portrays villainous and serious roles better in my opinion.
Louis? I only remember Gallen and Sunny the most from ATE1 and 2. I barely remember what Louis did besides him being a villain.
@Gar:I’ve enjoyed ATE1 but not so much ATE2, in fact, I became quite bored after Sunny’s character died and resorted to fast forwarding the rest of the series, esp. after Gallen’s character lost my interest in him. And totally not into the love triangle of Louis, Roger and Ada.
I think Sunny was great in ATE although his character change was a bit too sudden, but he was very compelling.

Sheren Tang is my most favourite actress now. I had also watched her first few TVB drama series in mid 1980, but I did not like her acting. However, she has worked so hard in her acting over the years, and her good acting is so good, well recognized, and respected.
Charmaine Sheh’s voice was heavily criticized as “chicken” voice when she first started. She said she had to recite Chinese newspapers every day in order to make it louder and clearer. Her voice is so good now that she was able to act a radio station DJ in “Heaven and Burns”, and received a lot of compliments.
As you said, “Roger Kwok has lazy intonations and all that which gives an impression of same sound”. This would make his dialogues very dull and monotonous. Clear articulation of words is a very important and basic element of good acting in performance. Roger Kwok should have improved on this weakness in those some 26 years if he is a very good actor. I am sure most of all good actors would work on their voice, intonation of words, as well as acting.

In my opinion, I feel that Charmaine’s acting is still pretty much the same to me. She has improved a little but not much. Also, your voice is how it is so I don’t think you can really change it if you were not naturally born with it, which is why people born with naturally good voices will always be better singers than people who were not naturally born with it regardless of what they do to their voice.

As regard to a person’s voice, you are right in a way saying that if a person has a strong voice, he/she can always sing better.
In terms of speaking dialogues, you don’t need a very strong voice to make the difference. All you have to do is to say it from your chest, not from your throat. If you say something from your throat, you cannot say it loudly and clearly. You are just mumbling. A lot of artistes did that when they first started, such as Charmaine Sheh, Natalie Tong, Lai Lok Yi and many others. As a result, their conversations were not clear and soft. Charmaine improved a lot since she practised it by reciting newspapers. Natalie and Lai Lok Yi were almost the same. However, both of them have improved a lot in the last two years, and are so much better in their dialogues.
It is the same with singing. A person can manipulate his/her voice by getting some technical voice training. Of course, a person with a strong voice can always do better than a person with a weak voice.
@sandcherry: How to define an idol and an idol fan? You cherish the acting of the ppl you mentioned, but at the same time, there are ppl who think that one/some/all of these names are just idol and can’t act. How do you argue with them? Due to your own taste?

Roger Kwok trumps Ruco as an actor anytime. I have followed Roger since his debut, when he was earmarked by TVB to be promoted and from the start he was a fantastic talented actor. However I lost touch with him when he went away to China and when he came back to TVB he had to start all over again, climbed his way up. Yes Rural Hero, he played an anti hero if I remember correctly. I may not remember or watch all his series but for the most of it I can remember he can play ancient series, modern series, play the bad guy, the good guy, drama is his specialty but remember that series with Joey Yung? Can’t remember the title but he was very very funny there, I remember one continous scene of him walking along and doing something which sums up the change in his character. To me he is up there with Wayne Lai, except Roger’s road is a tad easier although quite rocky as well. Why sometimes he falters is the role. The role is the fault, not him. Roger Kwok is a fantastic actor.
Much like Dicky Cheung who can do both comedy and drama with comedy his forte (and I hope he comes back to TVB one day as much as I hope Alex Man comes back or even Louis Koo for that matter or even Nick Cheung), Roger Kwok is an all rounder who can carry a series. Not many in TVB can do that, not even Ruco Chan. Look I know Ruco is very popular now, and that man can act, as I can see obviously in his new series I am watching now which I enjoyed immensely but to say he is a better actor than a few other names simply is a statement made by a fan. Call a spade a spade. Ruco Chan is a good actor but he is not yet great.

I miss D Cheung. He’s realy funny and lively as an actor. Roger is too in his comedies though a bit more varied depending on his costars.

Glad to see Joey Meng in TVB. Really like her acting in ATV for My Date with a Vampire known as Ma Siu-ling.
For Roger Kwok, I prefer to see him acts more as a villain character like the 笑看風雲 Instinct(1994) known as Poon Long-ching.
For me, WCL script is a bit of a turnoff, but most tvb.scripts are these days. Sigh.
