Ruco Chan Shares Tidbits of His Childhood Life
It seems like it was just yesterday when Ruco Chan (陳展鵬) announced his relationship with former Miss Hong Kong contestant Phoebe Sin (單文柔). Now, the 44-year-old is married and a father of an adorable one-year-old girl, Quinta.
Guest starring on an episode of the children’s talk show Kids, Think Big <Thing Big天地> hosted by Jarvis Chow (周奕瑋) and seven-year-old Grace Wong (黃芷晴), the A Fist Within Four Walls <城寨英雄> actor shared tidbits of his life as a child, and also his new role as a father.
Ruco surprised the hosts by sharing that his nickname at school was “Lo Hoi Pang (盧海鵬)”, simply because they both share “pang” in the name. Ruco added, “Back in the day, many of us watched TV, and you get to see Pang Gor every night on Enjoy Yourself Tonight <歡樂今宵>.
Ruco also shared that he and Edwin Siu (蕭正楠) used to be classmates back in primary school. If Ruco could go back in time, what would he do with Edwin? He said, “We went to the same school, but not in the same class. However, we definitely knew of each other. If I could go back in time, I would buy him ice cream! It’s what we all wanted to eat when we were kids.”
If Ruco could say one thing to his past self, what would it be? Ruco laughed and said, “I would tell myself to stop wetting my pants! I didn’t stop doing that until third grade!”
Flash forward to April 2019, when Ruco and Phoebe welcomed their first child, Quinta. Growing up, Ruco had never thought about having a family of his own. When Quinta came to this world, it all felt too surreal.
“I admit that there was a period of time where I didn’t feel like I was her father,” said Ruco. “That took a while to get used to. It was a journey. Now, she’s almost two years old. She knows how to call me Baba. She knows how to run around. Everything’s changed. Now, I really know what it means to be flesh and bone with someone. When she’s in pain, I feel it too.”
Kids learn from imitating their parents’ behavior, and Ruco realizes that he must be more careful with his actions.
“There was a period of time when I saw Quinta frown a lot. I then noticed that it was because of my wife and our caregiver. They’d get nervous and their eyebrows would furrow,” explained Ruco. “I told my wife to be more mindful of her expressions. After a while, Quinta stopped frowning.”
Ruco continued, “You have to change yourself before you teach kids. Every parents wants their child to learn as much as they can, but it’s also important to maximize good opportunities. I noticed that when Quinta is happiest she would start speaking nonsense—she’ll throw a lot of one-word sentences. I’ll use that opportunity to teach her more words. Find the right timing!”
