K-Drama “Sisyphus: The Myth” Concludes with Declining Ratings
Sci-fi thriller Sisyphus: The Myth opened with promise, but failed to sustain viewership as the drama progressed. Viewership ratings premiered at 5.6 percent, but declined to 4.3 percent when the drama aired its finale on April 8. Even Park Shin Hye and Jo Seung Woo‘s star power was not enough to save the drama, as the script was blamed for the disappointing results.
The 16-episode drama follows Park Shin Hye’s character as a skilled warrior from the post-apocalyptic future who travels back in time to save a war-torn world. Seeking answers from a genius engineer, played by Jo Seung Woo, she attempts to stop the chain of events, including the invention of a time machine, which would eventually lead to a destructive future.
Many viewers initially saw potential in the drama in building an interesting setting by combining technologically advanced sci-fi with time-travelling elements, but the underdeveloped plot and messy editing soon left a lot of loose plot holes.
While Sisyphus: The Myth is commended for its ambition by incorporating new and innovative themes in South Korean dramas, it is more a miss than a hit. Viewers hope that future dramas will continue to explore new genres and push boundaries while being rewarded with higher ratings.
