“Shang-Chi’s” Simu Liu Refutes Disney CEO
Billed as the first superhero film in the Marvel universe with an all-Asian cast, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings arrives in theaters on September 3, 2021.
Hits Back at the Idea that “Shang-Chi” is an “Experiment”
According to Disney CEO Bob Chapek, the film will have a different arrangement from other Marvel flicks – it will air for 45 days exclusively in theaters, before being streamed on Disney+, as an interesting “experiment” to find out how well the box office will fare during the pandemic. This comes days after he defends Black Widow’s hybrid release, in light of Scarlett Johansson’s lawsuit against the company’s decision which the actress felt affected the film’s poor box office and cost her $50 million in bonuses.
Although Bob Chapek worded his comments for Shang-Chi’s release to emphasize the importance of “striking a balance” between box office and online streaming, the film’s Chinese-Canadian lead, Simu Liu (劉思慕) had a different take, and expressed a racial perspective in a social media update in which he responded to Chapek’s official stand.
“We are not an ‘interesting experiment.’ We are the underdog; the underestimated. We are the ceiling-breakers. We are the celebration of culture and joy that will persevere after an embattled year. We are the surprise. I’m fired the f**k up to make history on September 3rd; JOIN US,”Simu wrote.
Simu had earlier expressed his belief that Marvel’s decision to remake Shang-Chi, a comic some felt had racist undertones, is in fact a step in the right direction towards authentic Asian representation in Hollywood, in response to fan criticism on the remake.

No offend, but I felt ScarJo is being a d1ck here. It’s the pandemic, >_> and here she’s crying over loosing $50mil. Gosh, she’s rich enough.
Agree. Wrong time to sue since the movie hasn’t even been released for two months. Just bad publicity for her.
