“Shang Chi” Overtakes “Black Widow” at Box Office
Since premiering in September, Marvel’s latest film Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings has received strong reviews and topped North American box office with $71.4 million US dollars, becoming the best-performing film of the COVID-19 pandemic. On September 24, the first Marvel film headlined by an Asian character took in another US $3.59 million to reach US $186.7 million, officially overtaking Black Widow’s US $183 million to become this year’s top-grossing film!
Diverse Cast, Theatrical Hit
Shang-Chi‘s strong box office showing has exceeded expectations, as it has already surpassed several hit Marvel productions including Incredible Hulk (US $132 million in 2008), Captain America: The First Avenger (US $177 million in 2011) and Thor (US $181 million in 2011) as well as Antman (also US $181 million in 2015).
Marvel productions which are ahead of the film include 2013’s Thor: The Dark World (US $206 million) and 2018’s Ant-man and the Wasp. As for non-Marvel-esque superhero flicks, Shang-Chi is now on track to surpass 2014’s The Amazing Spiderman 2 (US $203 million) and 2018’s Venom (US $214 million).
Shang-Chi is expected to reach the US $200 million domestic mark by week three, making it well-poised to defeat 2020’s Bad Boys for Life (US $204 million), as the biggest earner in 2020/2021. Competition is already hot on its heels come October, with anticipated cinematic releases including Venom: Let There Be Carnage, No Time to Die, Halloween Kills and Dune.
Meanwhile, a November 12 release date has already been announced for the Destin Daniel Cretin actioner on Disney+ streaming service.

Well deserved!!!
Kinda of difficult to not lol. Black Widow was sent straight to D+ with many regions still having some form of lockdown. And Shang Chi really appeals to the Asian demographic. If it was normal times I can see it making absolutely bank in the box office.
it has to appeal to more than just asian america since there are so few of us. there are plenty of diehard marvel fans that would pretty much watch anything marvel pumps out.
Also true.
Yup, totally agree with you there! The real cool part about the #’s is that there’s no money from ccp/prc since they pretty much black listed the movie…just goes to show they don’t really need their $, but obviously they want to out of greed.
So happy $ proud of them all, great, just super, what a movie, I’d see it again but the lines are still long.
So glad Shang Chi has such success in the box office. There wasn’t really big typical Hollywood name tagged on this and it’s still going to well. Looove that! Except Kingsley, but I don’t remember they hyped his name during promotion? I might had lived under a rock though, lol.
I love the costumes in the movies. It had a flare of Asian and modernized. Prime example is Tony’s “suite” here. Kudos MCU!
Also, I really like how they don’t use the typical C-Drama or K-Pop ‘vast’ or ‘wallpaper’ actors and actresses with their feminine slim features and the likes. I’m glad they went with more naturally real Chinese / Asian appearance.
Lastly, I JUST realize the Simu is credit for Akira fan-made trailer a few years ago. Naturally I had to googled it, and he IS in there! Ha! at 2:28-2:30 mark https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Rvss9TcGxs
yeah, no sissyboy types.
Exactly!
Side note – want to correct my typo on ‘vast.’ It’s supposed to be “vase,” lol.
Not fair, since black widow was also on Disney plus. Which is why she is suing Disney right now.
