Ruco Chan Interacts with Fans On His Birthday
With The Righteous Fists <鐵拳英雄> currently airing, lead actor Ruco Chan (陳展鵬) started his first-ever Weibo livestream, and interacted with fans on January 14, which coincided with his 45th birthday!
A Singing Career Nipped in The Bud
Going onscreen sans makeup during the live session, Ruco looks well-kept for his age, and revealed his singing ambitions to fans.
Having signed on with PolyGram Records in the year 1997, Ruco had already released four EPs and was en route to develop a singing career. Unfortunately, PolyGram was acquired by Universal Music Group in a headline-making merger in 1999, and Ruco’s career was abruptly sacrificed before he had the chance to release his first album. He was forced to start again from ground zero at Asian Television (ATV) in 2000, and decided to return to TVB in 2007. Throughout the years, Ruco has kept up his passion by singing theme and ending songs for dramas, including Never Know You Are the Best (從未知道你最好) for A Fist Within Four Walls <城寨英雄>; the father of one also hinted for fans to look forward to his new songs this year!
Reiterating his love for singing, the actor shared his observations of the music industry, and acknowledged his own shortcoming in that his imitation vibe had been too strong. “The singers from the past have a very strong sense of style, while the younger singer-songwriters nowadays tended to take the melodic path, and you’ll never grow bored of their songs even after a hundred repeats, though their songs are also very challenging!” Adding that he has been practising young singers’ songs consistently to improve his skills, Ruco hopes that he could “have a concert, or sing my [his] own songs when he meets [his fans]”. Revealing his ambitions, he also wants to sing “in Putonghua [Mandarin Chinese], Jay Chou’s (周杰倫) songs, and also that of brilliant singers in Hong Kong, like Jay Fung (馮允謙), MC (張天賦), as well as to sing the songs of the four heavenly kings thereafter,”
Primed to Enter the Mainland Market?
As it was his birthday, Ruco was bombarded with many well wishes from fans during the live session, putting him in a chirpy mood. Asked if he would consider taking part in Chinese reality show Call Me By Fire <披荊斬棘的哥哥> — which has successfully raised the profiles of participating HK artistes like Chilam Cheung (張智霖), Jordan Chan (陳小春) and Edmond Leung (梁漢文) — Ruco had a gung-ho reply, saying “Okay ah, if [they] invite me, I’ll go over, I’m surely a “brother” already,”
As for acting, Ruco also expressed his openness to trying out many roles, opining that trial and error is inevitable since it is difficult for actors to pro-actively seek out engaging themes for viewers. “…I hope to have more chances to work with different actors, they definitely do not have to be TVB actors, it’s actually good to be able to work with external actors, and great to work with mainland Chinese actors, that way we can have more interactions, most importantly we can bring viewers a refreshing experience.”
No stranger to Chinese audiences since he has starred in many a classic dramas, it seemed likely that the seasoned actor is looking forward to explore the mainland market, as he mentioned to fans that he hopes to visit a “different place” to celebrate with fans during his next birthday.
