Netflix Announces K-Drama Lineup in 2022
Streaming giant Netflix has quickly emerge as the frontrunner in introducing South Korean content to the global audience. After last year’s successful release of Squid Game, Hellbound and The Silent Year, Netflix is eager to continue riding on the Hallyu wave well into 2022.
Since 2016, Netflix had already set its eye on South Korean entertainment industry and worked with the countries’ top talents to release more than 130 Korean titles. The strategy was effective and Netflix’s viewership for Korean programming grew six-fold from 2019 to 2020. Most notably, Netflix’s Squid Game broke the record for the platform for highest viewership and topped the most-watched chart in over 94 countries.
After Squid Game was released, Netflix found success with Hellbound which was included in the Top 10 Netflix Shows in 93 countries and sat on the top spot in 34 countries. In addition, sci-fi series The Silent Sea topped the weekly non-English lists on its premiere.
As the global interest in Hallyu continues to grow, Netflix will be releasing over 25 South Korean titles this year as their largest South Korean annual lineup to date. Some notable mentions include All of Us Are Dead, a zombie apocalyptic thriller where students are trapped in a school during an outbreak; Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area, an adaptation of the critically-acclaimed Spanish original series; and South Vibe, an action thriller about a special-ops team in the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games.
The streaming giant also disclosed its commitment to investing in South Korean contents that are well-made and engaging for fans around the world.
