Seo Hyun and Lee Jun Young are Kinky Co-Workers in “Love and Leashes”
Starring Girls’ Generation’s Seo Hyun and actor Lee Jun Young, Netflix’s latest romcom film Love and Leashes explores BDSM fantasies in unexpectedly entertaining and informative ways. A world rarely explored in mainstream media with such insight, Love and Leashes courageously tries to break stigmas and encourage greater understanding of dominant and submissive lifestyles.
Love and Leashes is adapted from popular webtoon Moral Sense by author Winter. The movie opens with the clean-cut Jung Ji Hoo (Lee Jun Young) transferring to Jung Ji Woo’s department. Everything seems to be in order until Ji Hoo’s parcel containing SM products is mistakenly sent to Ji Woo due to their similar names. When his kinky preference is exposed, he is relieved that Ji Woo does not judge him and simply responds, “Aren’t we all a bit perverted in some way?”
Finding herself attracted to her colleague, Ji Woo agrees to role play as the dominatrix to indulge Ji Hoo’s long-held fantasies of power exchange. Both sign a three-month contract to set up clear boundaries, but how does Ji Woo grapple with her feelings as she gets increasingly emotionally invested?
The Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy, which grossed US$1.3 billion worldwide, brought BDSM culture into mainstream interest. Unlike the erotic thriller, Love and Leashes is more lighthearted in tone and focuses on the psychological fulfillment of BDSM and clears stereotypes of such lifestyles. The film effectively highlights the importance of consent, respect, and clear communication about mutual needs in relationships.

Watched “Love And Leashes” last night. While the lifestyle depicted is not for everyone, it is certainly insightful for mature audiences who are curious and not familiar with the culture. Despite its topic, it is not graphic.
Wasn’t sure which direction the movie would go, but my husband thought the increasing SM play would lead to the male character’s death LOL, as most western material on the genre would be a lot darker.
didn’t watch 50 shades of gray but i heard it would be clearly a category 3 maybe 4 film in chinese standards. i wonder how far this one will go. Kudos to the korean industry for covering this topic. i am sure a good number of people are into it but so few mainstream film/drama cover it. will definately be refreshing to pivot from romcom to some hardcore stuff although this has a comedic feel to it also.
@momo “Love and Leashes” is not explicit, and can feel like a tutorial to the BDSM culture at times because many aspects are explained to novice viewers. While it did explain the psychology of why the characters decide to try out this culture, it is definitely not something that would be widely adopted as it’s really a matter of personal preference.
