Lesley Chiang Calls Out Cyberbullies

Although often viewed as lively and energetic, Lesley Chiang (姜麗文) had previously suffered depression eight years ago and attempted suicide on three occasions. Incessant cyberbullying had impacted Lesley’s mental health. Recently, the 36-year-old actress’ Instagram post about being bullied once again caused concern over her emotional well-being.

In her post, Lesley wrote:

“Man, people are really mean sometimes. For anyone who knows me personally, the me on TV and the me in person are pretty much the same. I’m not putting up an act or a front. You don’t even know me. If you don’t like me, just change the channel. I’m so confused why you gotta complain every episode, and take your time to find me on IG just to comment or DM me how you disagree with the way I talk or walk or stand?”

“I had to stop watching my own cooking show coz I feel so sad when I watch myself… be myself. Is there something wrong with me? I’ve always been hyper and happy and energetic. How is this bad, especially when there’s so much fakeness and darkness in the world. I’m literally just showing you who I am. I understand the fame comes with the haters. But geez. There’s a Pandemic. War. Famine. Poverty. And so much more going on. Why the hell do I even matter? Focus on more important things, please. Cyberbullying is always so hurtful. I didn’t think I would address this, coz I didn’t want to give power to the bullies. But I’ve never had to stop watching my own work or show, simply because some people on the Internet said some mean things. Maybe it hurts more coz I’m confused what I did wrong. ”

Choosing to use this opportunity to advocate for a topic close to her heart, Lesley ended her post urging others to stop cyber bullying:

“It’s mental health awareness month. I struggle with depression. In fact, this time round it’s been heavy and a challenge. Let’s remind each other be kind. Be an example for others too. There’s literally. No. Time. For. Hate. Let me live, let me be. If you’re not a fan, just… please leave me alone. I’m just a girl chasing her dreams and doing her job. Please stop the cyber bullying.”

  1. I’m mpt trivialising her condition but one word of advice, don’t read those comments. Ignore them and be a happier person. Ignorance at times is absolute bliss. People will comment for as long she remains a celeb. If it hurts that much, and to throw away precious life over some insane comments is not worth it and perhaps a career change may make her a much happier person.

    1. I agree, she should unplug from social media and just let her assistant or PR take care of those things. Social Media isn’t the only thing contributing to depression, but it certainly worsens it. There will always be nasty people online and best to not see them at all.

  2. Lesley, just be yourself and do your best. Dont care about anybody’s comment. Sometimes they did it on purpose just to hurt you
