In the 13-second long video, Feng Xiaogang and his wife Xu Fan (徐帆) were seen sending off their friends at what appeared to be the entrance of their luxury mansion, next to a landrover model car. The 64-year-old filmmaker, who was behind the likes of Cell Phone, A World Without Thieves and I Am Not Madame Bovary is seen looking visibly thinner, and appeared restrained while watching on as hugs were exchanged and continuous expressions of “Thanks” in Mandarin could be heard. The couple was dressed casually and in slippers, while their adopted daughter Xu Duo (徐朵) could also be seen.
Widely rumored to be complicit in the Fan Bingbing tax evasion scandal, Feng Xiaogang has previously denied these charges on his social media, which has since been cleared of posts. Meanwhile, photos of his luxury mansions were widely circulated online, with talk that the director acquired a luxury mansion near Beverly Hills for five million in 2014, and another mansion four years for over 6 million in 2018.
Prompting avid online discussions, the news had netizens bringing up the filmmaker’s tax dodging rumors and saying he skipped town, while others commented he might be in the States to accompany his daughter on her studies.
