Michelle Yeoh on Being Nominated for the Oscars

Michelle Yeoh’s (楊紫瓊) breakout role in Everything Everywhere All at Once is breaking barriers. After winning Best Actress at the Golden Globes, Michelle is also nominated for Best Actress at the upcoming Academy Awards.

Sharing that she had met with her Everything Everywhere All at Once costars after the news came out, including Jamie Lee Curtis, Ke Huy Quan, James Hong, and directors Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan, Michelle shared, “We all screamed in excitement!” In addition to Michelle’s nomination, the film has also been shortlisted for 11 Oscar categories, including Best Supporting Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Director, and Best Picture.

Despite the accomplishment and feeling ecstatic over the Oscars’ nomination, Michelle also admitted to feeling some sadness. “The Oscars have a 95-year history. I am so happy to be able to achieve this, but also feel a little sad because before me, there were many, many amazing Asian actresses. I am standing on the shoulders of these giants. I hope this will break the damn glass ceiling. I also hope that this breakthrough is permanent, and we see more Asian representation on stage.”

Having been pigeonholed in action roles for the majority of her career, Michelle’s role in Everything Everywhere All at Once presented her with the opportunity to diversify her resume and showcase her range of acting skills.

Reflecting on her almost 40 years in the industry, Michelle expressed, “Sometimes, I think that I love my job. I love acting. I didn’t join the industry to win awards, but instead to show the best side of myself.”

She added with a smile, “Of course, please give me the Oscars award. This is just an award, but also an encouragement that explains the importance of not giving up. If you believe in yourself, then please do not give up. I’ve spent 40 years on this, and have finally gotten to this point.”

  1. I would not consider as a top actress as compared to others but she does handle roles that suit her well. She have made many smart choices.

But she is a extremely physically hardworking, dedicated and daring actress… Her spirit impresses me more than her acting skills. I am glad to see her winning this award…it opens doors for more to come.

There is still lots of typecast in Hollywood on good roles for “Yellow skin” Asians… Most are combat roles. Which is understandable.

    1. @Hohliu agreed! I was never impressed by her acting, but she has the all around package to make her marketable to Western audiences. plus her indomitable spirit makes her durable in an otherwise fleeting industry

  2. Haha such a sassy answer! Always love her, her acting, charisma, everything! She can be a super high class lady or a cleaning lady and you would buy it! Totally deserving of an award!
