Simu Liu Expresses Grief Over California Shooting

Although the new year has just begun, three mass shootings have already taken the lives of 24 people in California in January. As the United States struggles with rising mass shootings, actor Simu Liu (劉思慕) was highly empathetic over the horrific Monterey Park shooting which left 11 people dead who had gathered at a dance hall to celebrate Lunar New Year.

Police identified 72-year-old Huu Can Tran as the gunman responsible for the Monterey Park shooting. That same night, he drove to a second dance studio in Alhambra. Fortunately, 26-year-old staff Brandon Tsay, wrestled with the gunman and disarmed him, preventing another mass shooting. When the police closed in on him the next morning, Tran died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside his car. Police are currently still investigating the shooter’s motive, although he was discovered to have frequented the Monterey Park dance hall years ago.

With crimes against Asian communities going up since the COVID-19 pandemic, an increasing number of Asian Hollywood stars have spoken up to raise awareness and advise what the public can do to support their communities. Shortly after the incident, Simu tweeted about Monterey Park and called it a “terrible act.” Following the developing events closely, Simu was quick to point out Brandon Tsay’s heroism in preventing another mass shooting. Simu wrote, “Brandon’s courage is a light in a dark weekend marred by tragedy and sorrow.”
