Fan Bingbing Returns to Cannes Red Carpet
Closing with Johnny Depp’s French film Jeanne du Barry, the 76th Cannes Film Festival saw various Chinese actresses dressed to impress. After her comeback in Korean film Green Night post tax-evasion scandal, actress Fan Bingbing (范冰冰) makes her return in a Chinese ink painting-themed gown with fearsome tiger prints that received mixed reactions.
The actress is no stranger to red carpet glory at Cannes, and her dramatic tiger dress look this year is her ninth time gracing the occasion, said her studio. Her strapless gown showed off a jungle scene and she paired it with immaculate hairdo and drape-style earrings.
A Walking Medicinal Plaster?
Evoking a whirl of discussions, some netizens claimed that Fan Bingbing’s reduced recognizability was evident as she was “neglected by the foreign media,” and even described the scene as “embarrassing” at this year’s filming event. Fans of the 41-year-old rebutted this by referencing the festival’s official social pages, to point out that the actress was the only Chinese film star whose photos were published.
While her strapless gown received mocking comments from some netizens for resembling the packaging of a Chinese traditional medicinal plaster product, actress Kitty Zhang (張雨綺) won admiring comments with her black, low-cut black getup which showed off her curves, as did rising actresses Jiang Mengjie (蔣夢婕) and Guan Xiaotong (關曉彤) who each ooze sexiness in their respective outfits.

They picked the wrong dress to publicize. This dress was boring and uninspiring. I would’ve picked a Chinese black and white ink pattern over this one. HOWEVER, she did choose 2 dresses that were easily the best things I’ve seen her wear EVER.
She had worn a few very dramatic and glamorous dresses in the past… but this dress looks dreadful…
You should look at her other dresses for Cannes this year. They were AMAZING. Why they choose this dress to publicize is beyond me.
She may be lacking a good fashion stylist…or good China fashion designers away staying away from her since she is black listed by Industry leaders. Thus she has limited choice… I wonder if my guesses are right?
@Hohliu it’s definitely a boon to FBB if she can’t get Chinese brands or other iconic brands to sponsor her. As a result, her looks are more eclectic and INTERESTING. Her fashion sense before was like magazine polish, but it’s insipid. Makes her look fantastic, but ultimately her looks were one dimensional. This time around, her dresses actually wager discussion (from me at least.) She slayed Cannes this year.
Lol, Lol, You are right, she is back in the news and get people talking…
