Popular singer Gigi Yim (炎明熹) is rumored to have been “shelved” by TVB due to refusal to renew her contract. Not only will she be absent from the upcoming Hong Kong and Taiwan awards ceremonies, she will also be sitting out of a concert at the MacPherson Stadium in Mong Kok next month, where her Stars Academy <聲夢傳奇> mates, Windy Zhan (詹天文), Chantel Yiu (姚焯菲), and Yumi Chung (鍾柔美), are performing.
Attending the press conference for new drama No Room for Crime <反黑英雄> which will start airing on June 24, Stars Academy alumnus Aska Cheung (張馳豪) was asked about the rumors regarding 19-year-old Gigi. “Really? I have no idea. It’s not appropriate for me to ask about her personal matter. I still have some time left on my contract, and much to learn. If Gigi were to leave in future and joins another company, I will feel strange because we all grew up together on Stars Academy…I will miss her,” he said.

A pity if tvb freezes her. I think she’s probably the most talented singer in hkk in my own opinion. Her voice fits any genre and hits those high notes like a breeze. She’s in the same level as Mariah and Ariana.
I think Gigi has potential, but it’s not the kind of awe that I had with Gem. I think she has a really unique voice and certain stresses and techniques she uses are really good. But her voice isn’t strong enough – more delicate and thin. She needs to work on her vibrato more too.
Makes sense for her to leave The Voice Entertainment Group/TVB Music label if she wants to grow in the industry. No big/growing artists are signed to this label, just mainly artists restricted to TVB’s orbit. For all the hype around Raymond Lam’s return to HK, he signed with The Voice for 2 years then left.
I mean, why would TVB continue to promote her if it didn’t make economic sense anymore? Because of the goodness of their heart?
