Ella Koon Implicated in Family Asset Dispute

Ella Koon’s (官恩娜) family is currently embroiled in a bitter dispute over her late maternal grandmother Lo Siu Fung’s (勞笑鳳) assets.

The plaintiffs are the matriarch’s eldest daughter Mak Ngan Dai (麥銀娣) and her third daughter Mak Lai Ping (麥麗萍) and her daughter Mak Mei Wah (麥美華). The defendants are Ella’s mother and Lo Siu Fung’s youngest daughter Mak Ngan Lai (麥銀麗) and Lo Siu Fung’s godson Fung Ming Yip (馮明業).

Viewing money as very important, Lo Siu Fung was frugal and did not spend money on others. She was willing to buy things that kept their value and once bought a ceramic display from Lane Crawford. Ever since her husband passed in 1996, she lived alone in their property at Hennessy Road. Although she lived alone, she did not feel lonely nor did she regret not having a son.

In 2011, Lo Siu Fung moved to live with Mak Ngan Lai after health issues arose. Mak Ngan Dai said that she and the other two plaintiffs visited in March 2012 and their mother was happy to see her at the time. “When I asked how she was doing, she was hesitant to answer and was afraid that Fung would overhear. She shared that Mak Ngan Lai wasn’t feeding her but Fung yelled at her, ‘If you keep talking then I won’t help you and you’ll have to explain yourself to Mak Ngan Lai.’ My mother appeared scared and changed the topic.”

Mak Ngan Dai stated her mother was in joint tenancy with Ella’s twin brother Koon Chung Ming (官仲銘) for their Belair Villa in Fanling. Mak Ngan Dai stated this joint tenancy agreement was not fair to her mother and the sisters.

The defendants questioned why Lo did not immediately tell Mak Ngan Dai if she felt threatened. Mak Ngan Dai replied that her mother used body language to reflect her fear and due to this, she visited again within a short period of time. At that time, her mother had tears in her eyes as she claimed Ella had called and yelled at her angrily. She did not disclose what was discussed, but Mak Ngan Dai suspected it had to do with her last visit. She also believed Ella would benefit from the division of her assets, as Ella’s mother Mak Ngan Lai had remortgaged the property and Ella was listed as one of the borrowers.

The defendant stated that Mak Ngan Dai had gotten into an argument with Lo Siu Fung during her second visit over the title of the Belair Villa. Afterwards Lo no longer wanted to be in contact with her eldest daughter. Mak Ngan Dai refuted this statement and stated her mother had always wanted to have her own home and wanted to move to Belair Villa so she did not have to live under someone else’s rules. “Even her grandchild, someone of such low seniority within the family had yelled at her so viciously.”

When asked whether the three plaintiffs had asked Lo to live with them, Mak Ngan Dai stated that they all had their own difficulties.

Ella will not be testifying in court in the family asset litigation. She appeared to want to distance herself from the dispute, as she is currently on vacation to Mongolia.
